A Look Inside Developer Operations at Facebook

The Developer Operations team at Facebook is a unique, global team that works to maintain the integrity of the site and to ensure we're providing a high-quality, safe and trustworthy experience. Spread across offices in California, Dublin and Singapore, our team works hard to ensure the applications integrated into Facebook platforms are compliant with our policies and don't take advantage of anyone using them.
Though our team's mission is straightforward, the intricacies of achieving and maintaining compliance are far from simple. Depending on a team member's role, they might be involved in everything from reviewing apps to investigating them for integrity/policy violations. This role could also mean looking into businesses to identify data misuse, improving the developer experience and engagement, analyzing complex datasets and providing insights, onboarding new products into our operations and more. No two days on the Developer Operations team at Facebook are alike.
Developer Operations team members have a high-level of cognitive thinking and must be capable of complex, sound decision-making. It's also necessary to have an understanding of technology and how the internet can be used for good and bad. The team is comprised of experts across a wide range of functions, including project managers, data specialists, researchers, investigators, user experience specialists, app reviewers and more. All of whom work in sync to maintain compliance and ensure developers have a smooth and pleasant experience. Together, we're focused on scaling our methods to increase the speed at which we discover apps that are not compliant with Facebook policies. We are extremely careful and diligent, and our investigations are wide but are also very thorough and data-centric. The faster we're able to uncover non-compliant apps, the less time their creators have to break the rules and endanger those who trust our platform.
A couple of the projects we've worked on include:
  • Instant Games: as a new platform, we worked with Product, Engineering and the Policy teams to establish the necessary workflows for developers to submit and have their apps reviewed prior launch. Furthermore, we also establish a continuous review process for those games to ensure they remain compliant to our policies after launch. The work involved setting up queues, internal policies, investigatory tools and techniques, training the reviewers, defining operational reports and much more.
  • Deep App Investigations: In early 2018, Facebook promised that we would review apps with access to significant amounts of data (read more here). Our team was responsible for creating the processes and tools, establishing and running the review operations, providing updates and insights and coordinating with several other teams such as legal, product, engineering and others. This massive undertaking was a perfect representation of Facebook's values.
A couple of the projects we've worked on include:
As the protectors and enforcers of the integrity of Facebook, the work done on the Developer Operations team is very rewarding. Every single day we have the humbling responsibility to ensure that billions of people — across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Instant Games, Oculus and others — have a safe and great experience.
