A Look Inside Small and Medium Business Analytics at Facebook

Facebook's Small & Medium Business (SMB) Analytics Team is based in Menlo Park and comprised of people from many different backgrounds including Statistics PhDs, Economic Consultants, Business Analysts, Marketers, and more. We thrive off of the differing backgrounds of each analyst which promotes a culture of diverse thought where different perspectives and ideas are encouraged. Although our backgrounds may vary, the one thing we all have in common is a strong interest in applying our analytical background to solve business problems.
Every day, millions of advertisers use Facebook products to achieve real business outcomes. With SMB supporting 4 million advertisers, we have to think of the full spectrum of solutions for each segment of advertiser which range from Fortune 500 companies all the way to the small mom and pop shops. Since each advertiser has a unique level of sophistication, budget, objective, and limitation, we work to build out the most comprehensive set of solutions for each segment, and adapt them to our ever-changing products. Our team is critical to the growth and success of Small & Medium Businesses and we contribute directly to this goal by improving advertiser outcomes through data by mapping the right products and solutions to the right advertisers.
As a SMB Analyst, we work on what impacts the business the most and by doing so, there are a variety of projects and initiatives team members are tasked with and have autonomy to execute on. Like any Analyst, there is operational work, such as pipeline writing and visualization building. There is also short-term or ad-hoc analytics needs, such as understanding why a metric went up or down, or doing an opportunity sizing analysis to determine where we should invest our resources. There are also more longer term, strategic projects that may not have an immediate impact to the business today, but can change our business in the future. This type of work includes understanding advertiser life-cycles, segmentation, LTV models, and best practice definitions to name a few.
Lastly, we are communicators. One of the most underrated and appreciated skills an analyst can have is the ability to communicate well. As a SMB Analyst, we work with many cross-functional partners in marketing, business intelligence, product, engineering, and sales/support and as part of our job, we communicate our findings and recommendations to these cross-functional partners and advocate for our solutions to get our ideas implemented.
