Behind the Scenes with the Enterprise Engineering team

This post was published before the Facebook company became Meta. For the most recent Meta Careers blog posts, visit our blog homepage.
At the heart of the Facebook company, you’ll find the Enterprise Engineering (EE) team. From empowering the transition to remote work to building software that helps team members collaborate each day, the EE team builds reliable, intuitive, and scalable systems to help drive productivity for people and teams across the company. We recently caught up with five members of the EE team to learn more about the growing hub in Austin, Texas and how the team is building for the future of remote work.

Empowering efficient teams

“Time is everyone’s most valuable resource. Solving a problem that makes someone’s day easier and gives them a bit of time back drives me,” shares Melvin F., a systems engineer on the Enterprise Infrastructure and Security team.
Melvin and his team solve common problems through automation. Most recently, he built an internal tool that significantly reduces the time it takes to troubleshoot recurring issues. “We saw that people who work at Facebook were waiting a long time to address certain connectivity or video chat delays, so we created this tool to solve that problem. We’re constantly working to create a productive environment for everyone at Facebook,” he shares.
Poornima R., an engineering manager, who works on security shares “before the pandemic, we kept offices, employees, and data safe through prevention, detection, and monitoring. Now, we’re focused on how we’ll keep our people and data safe while working remotely.”

Team growing in Austin

Austin, Texas is an eclectic city. Known for its delicious BBQ, live music scene, and affordable lifestyle, it’s no surprise many team members call Austin home. “The Austin office feels like one big family,” shares Erin C., Lead Product Manager for Productivity Labs. She shared her experience of joining the EE Austin team during the quarantine.
“I’ve never met my team in person, but we’re a tight-knit community, and the EE team takes pride in establishing that strong culture. People work together, but also have real friendships outside of the office. I think this dynamic empowers us to build stronger products.”
Jam J., an engineering manager, helps empower the collaborative culture in Austin. When he relocated from Seattle to Austin, Jam joined an office of engineers, many who were early in their careers, and saw an immediate opportunity to make a big impact.
“I set out to improve work/life flexibility, increase the team’s skills, and create a supportive environment,” Jam shares. “EE is a growing team, and maintaining this culture as we scale is vital. I want all new team members to know that everyone who joins will be welcomed, supported, and have a great start here,” he says.
For infrastructure engineering manager, Scott H., working on the EE team in Austin means getting in on the ground floor. “My team is pretty new so it almost feels like a startup,” Scott shares. “There’s very little existing code, so we have this opportunity to explore new ways to automate for our infrastructure platforms. The complexity and ability to work on different things and touch a variety of technologies inspires me.”

The Future of remote work

As we move into the future, our mission is to ensure Facebook has an industry-leading approach to distributed work at scale, where people and teams are connected, included, and productive at home and at the office. Our solutions and services need to work well for a hybrid workforce and be as effective for teams who are working remotely as much as for teams working in-office.
With the shift to remote work, EE enabled the ability to work from home very early on, and are continuing to offer support in ways such as enhancing video conferencing, onboarding employees completely remotely with new hire training and devices, and shipping business critical equipment to help them stay productive.
“From the beginning, Enterprise Engineering was and still is critical to onboarding employees who’ve never set foot in a Facebook office,” Erin says. “From enhancing video conferencing to onboarding team members and ensuring our people have the right equipment to work from home, EE has been the driving factor in making this transition possible. It’s been a massive shift in how we work day-to-day and I’m proud to be part of the team facilitating this.”
For Poornima, the past few months have been centered on brainstorming and strategy. “We’re reimagining the future of remote work from all perspectives. “Planning 2021 means ensuring our people and teams are connected and productive in this new hybrid way of working from home and in the office,” she shares. “We’re working to ensure we can offer the same level of protection for our people and our assets as we did in person. For example, we’ve implemented an SOS line for people to contact security quickly. Another big project is creating a safe return to work when the time comes. For many, the flexibility of remote work is great, but they want the ability to go into the office when it’s safe to do so. We’re thinking about things like contact tracing and safe, spaced lunches. There’s a lot in the works, but nothing this team can’t handle.”
