Building for Safety and Fighting Misinformation at Facebook D.C.

Facebook is an online community of billions, and the Washington, D.C., engineering team strives every day to keep them safe. Our nation’s capital is a fitting home for the teams working hard to build products that promote safe, inclusive communities and minimize bad experiences on Facebook.
As we work toward our mission of bringing the world closer together, we have the responsibility of ensuring Facebook is a place that is open and authentic, while protecting the private information of our users and keeping our platform safe. We take that responsibility seriously. As we have continued to invest heavily in our security and safety teams and technology, the Facebook D.C. office has expanded at a rapid pace that will continue over the next several years. We’re hiring talented engineers who like to tackle complex issues and build solutions that make the world a better place.

Facebook DC innovations

Our Washington, D.C., engineering teams collaborate cross-functionally to do work that impacts over two billion people worldwide. This meaningful work includes:
  • Community safety: our D.C. engineering teams work on image hashing technology — creating unique digital fingerprints — one of the ways we prevent terrorist or non-consensual intimate images or videos from being uploaded to our platform.
  • Election security: initiatives designed to protect and promote civic engagement are conceived and built in D.C. to combat foreign interference, remove fake accounts, increase ads transparency, and reduce the spread of false news.

Inside our new office

In 2018, we moved into a new office in Terrell Place to accommodate our rapidly growing team. Located in Penn Quarter, the revitalized historic arts and entertainment district, the new Facebook D.C. office houses incredible talent from teams ranging from connectivity and public policy to data science and communications. These teams, comprised of people with diverse backgrounds and perspectives, work together to build products that make a global impact in the fast-paced environment of a startup, but with the resources, reach, tools, and benefits of a large tech company. Meet some of the team

“As a software engineer on the Investigation Platforms team, I get to work with people all over the world. I work on products that help others investigate and take action against bad actors on Facebook. It’s crazy to think there are so many terrible people out there who want to use social media to cause damage to others. The most rewarding part of this job is that I truly get to help people and prevent real world harm. When we get messages from law enforcement officials thanking us for helping them save someone, I feel like I’m making a difference in the world.” Jeff, Software Engineer, Investigation Platforms at Facebook D.C.

“It all started when a Facebook recruiter reached out with a LinkedIn message. At the time, I had spent 17 years as a government contractor, and wasn’t really looking for a new role. But the message piqued my interest, so I responded. When I learned there was a growing D.C. office, I knew I had to explore the opportunity. Now, three and a half years later, I’m so glad I followed through.
I love the opportunities working in this office provides. With our office’s focus on Investigative Tools, Public Safety, and Data Privacy, we frequently see examples of how our work makes a positive difference in people’s lives. For instance, we help the Law Enforcement Response Team respond to emergencies which routinely result in missing people being found.
I also love the flexibility Facebook gives me with my 10-year-old son. With the office in a central location near all Metro lines, I’m able to adjust my work day to make sure I’m there to pick him up from school each day. I would recommend everyone look into opportunities here at the Facebook D.C. office, as it provides a whole new perspective on work and life in the country’s capital.” Carla, Software Engineer at Facebook D.C.

“When I first joined Facebook eight years ago, I was worried about working at a big company; but I was inspired by Facebook’s impact around the world. At Facebook D.C., I work on incredibly challenging problems. We have an obligation to protect the 2 billion people we serve as well as their personal information, and to do that we are making long-term investments in privacy products and infrastructure.
There’s a lot of growth in D.C. and opportunity for passionate engineers to join our team. It’s a tight-knit office, and we get to work with experts across a variety of fields. I’ve looked at other companies, but there’s no other place where I can have the impact I do here.” Benjamin, Software Engineer at Facebook D.C.

"I never wanted to be an engineer. Having grown up in Silicon Valley, I felt the technology industry was too insular. The turning point for me was realizing I could apply computer science to any other field I was interested in, and by leveraging technology, I could solve problems much more effectively.
As an engineer on the Investigation Platforms team, I work cross-functionally with the security, legal, policy and privacy teams at Facebook to track bad actors on our services. The team in D.C. is more than a group of coders. Our engineers build infrastructure to solve the toughest integrity problems the company faces: combatting foreign interference in elections, terrorist activity on our platforms, and threats to minors' online safety. I’ve also been working closely with recruiting to bring diversity initiatives to this office and I'm attending the Grace Hopper Celebration in the fall. This is why I came to Facebook D.C. - to do our part in protecting people and democracy.” Maya, Software Engineer at Facebook D.C.
