Business Product Marketing at Facebook

At Facebook, Product Marketing Managers find the intersection between people's needs, marketers' needs, and Facebook's strongest differentiators to drive the development, launch, and growth of industry-leading business products. Product Marketing Managers partner with product, sales, and cross-functional leadership to drive development and adoption of our business products across the market. John Z, a Product Marketing Lead on the GMS Internal Products team, shares insight into working on the Business Product Marketing team.

Why did you join the Product Marketing team at Facebook?

I was excited about the opportunity to directly impact our products and bring value to the company. The Business Product Marketing team plays a pivotal role in translating both qualitative and quantitative data to help drive the best product decisions in support of our internal people and external clients.

How does Product Marketing at Facebook differ from other organizations?

Due to the vast array of customers that Facebook serves it requires a comprehensive suite of products and services. Facebook product marketers conduct thorough quantitative and qualitative analysis to help drive clarity in understanding different customer segments, pain points and product opportunities to help drive a comprehensive product strategy. In addition, they bring these products to market and work closely with Product, Engineering, Design, Research and Sales to help inform iterative product development.

Tell us more about your background prior to joining Facebook

I was fortunate to serve as an Intelligence Officer in the United States Army for 10 years. I served throughout the world and helped drive strategic operational decisions based on both quantitative and qualitative information. As my career progressed I helped create and inform products that were used to expedite analysis of complex information and share insights globally.

What is your skill set and how does it make you successful in your current role at Facebook?

Through my prior experiences, I've developed the skills to distill complex and varied information into actionable insights and product opportunities. A Facebook product marketer thrives in ambiguity and is excited about challenging problems that require deep analysis while also being able to come up from the details and effectively communicate to the market, technical and non-technical stakeholders.

How have you made an impact in your role here at Facebook?

I worked closely with the research team to conduct a deep analysis of my organization, Global Marketing Solutions (GMS), at Facebook to understand all of the different teams. I was curious to learn about their pain points and find opportunities to help drive value both for the internal person as well as how that translates to value for our clients. I worked with business stakeholders to prioritize the right investments and ensure that our Product & Engineering teams were organized effectively to help drive collaborative and impactful products to market.

How does your work contribute to Facebook's mission?

By enabling our Global Marketing Solutions team to be more efficient and productive and focus on driving client value we know it has a direct impact on our clients and Facebook users. It is a critical channel to help drive forward Facebook's mission of connecting the world and bringing us closer together. Each time an SMB client grows their business on our platform this has an immediate impact in their local community and helps drive significant economic opportunity. When a global client takes a stand on a critical social issue with Facebook we have unprecedented ability to help bring awareness globally to key issues.

How do you work cross functionally with other teams?

Facebook Product Marketers are cross functional gurus. This role requires close partnership with marketing, product management, engineering, product design, user research and sales on a daily basis. Product marketers often provide a balanced unbiased point of view across cross functional teams to help drive impact for both the product and the company.

What are the top 3 reasons you love being in your role here at Facebook?

1. Opportunity to Drive Change. This is hands down one of the best parts of Facebook is the motto that “This is your company”. This resounds in every part of your work and allows you to make the most of opportunities to drive value for Facebook and our partners.
2. Extremely intelligent people that are intensely passionate about driving change in the world.
3. Transparent and Open. Every leader from Mark down is transparent and open. Transparency and humility is celebrated and encouraged.

1. Do your homework. Understand at a basic level the Facebook ads products and overall Facebook services.
2. Think about opportunities you see to improve them and how you have helped influence cross functional partners in previous roles.
3. Be present and open throughout the interview process.
