There are many product teams at Facebook that are helping small businesses (SMBs) around the world build stronger communities and connect with their customers in meaningful ways. These teams are building tools designed to give SMBs a voice and increase their reach, while redefining the advertising industry with leading technology.
To learn more about the rewarding work being done to empower SMBs, we asked four of our talented product leaders to share their stories.
Nikila S., Product Lead - Ads Growth
Growing up in South India, I’ve always been passionate about improving technology for the developing world. Prior to joining Facebook, I helped start a magazine in India that grew into a media company. Working at Facebook was on my bucket list and I joined five years ago as part of the Android team. I went on to help start a team focused on businesses in emerging markets and shipped lightweight video creation tools for small businesses. I now lead the team working on empowering every business around the world to have a voice and be successful on our platform.
“SMBs are the backbone of an economy and should have access to the same resources to grow their businesses as larger companies do. For example, I met a woman in Indonesia who grew her entire business using Facebook ads.””
This is what makes me so proud to be able to build on-the-go lightweight advertising tools accessed by millions of small businesses across the world today. Being able to see the real-world impact we’re having is so motivating.
Something I really appreciate about Facebook is how passionate my colleagues are about our mission, but at the same time are willing to respectfully challenge each other and ask the tough questions. Everyone in the room has the opportunity to share their opinions and voice their concerns. As leaders, we're constantly thinking about how our work will impact the people using our platforms and we're willing to go down the harder path when it's the right thing to do, even if it impacts ROI.
Amit G., Technical Program Management Ads & Leadership
Before I joined Facebook, I saw ads as a means to run a business. Yet our mission is truly different; we’re empowering people and businesses to build stronger connections in their communities. It’s rewarding to be part of a team that is making a real-world impact by helping SMBs and non-profits grow their businesses and teams. I was helping one of my friends start a financial planning company to benefit low-income families, and in just a month, they were amazed by the impact Facebook ads had on their company. Those stories inspire me to keep going.
One of the things I like most about Facebook is that when you go to a team for help, there’s never a question of “Why?” Everyone assumes the best intentions, so it’s more a question of “How can I help you?” That level of collaboration helps us move fast and stay focused on solving problems. The people who have a growth mindset and are always learning are the ones who thrive in our environment. We have great leaders who know a lot and can make a difference, but leaders here don’t know all the answers. They’re here to challenge you to take risks and help you find the right answer. I believe that if you stay humble as you learn, you’ll ultimately build better products.
Mary K., Director of Product Management
I joined Facebook because I was craving the opportunity to build and ship products more quickly than I was able to at other tech companies. I’d heard that despite the company’s size, things move really fast. That has proven to be true, but the biggest surprise has been how much I enjoy working at a mission-driven company. I’m working on ads delivery, and our mission is to make every interaction between businesses and customers useful and meaningful. I’ve realized that this mission really matters to me and inspires me to make a difference.
There’s a lot more autonomy at Facebook than other companies. It’s more of a “you tell us what needs to be done,” rather than the other way around. There’s a misconception that to work on ads delivery, you need to have extensive background in advertising. That’s not the case; it’s just as important to be intellectually curious, and to want to know what’s happening in our system and how things work. We welcome people who bring a fresh way of thinking—it gives us a new perspective when tackling challenging problems.
Maryanna Q., Product Lead - Ads Creation and Guidance
I didn’t think I would ever work for a large company like Facebook, but it amazingly feels smaller than it is. Within Product Management in Ads we have a bottoms up culture that has given me a degree of autonomy that helps me to do my best work. Our approach is to point teams in the right direction, but give each team the flexibility to figure out how to meet goals. This level of autonomy plus being surrounded by humble, yet really smart people, is what I love most about working at Facebook. It has also enabled me do the most meaningful work of my career.
My team works on products that impact how advertisers create and edit their ads. We provide a toolset for businesses of all sizes to use to grow their return on investment. I work to level the playing field for both our largest advertisers and the small business owners who don’t have an entire team focused on advertising. For example, my teams have been able to build media-creative and quick ad creation features within the Ads Manager App to help small businesses to create effective ads in under two minutes on mobile. Features like these help SMBs who don't have huge marketing budgets to more easily succeed in digital advertising. For example, my sister has been able to grow her dress business through Facebook advertising, and it has been so rewarding to see that firsthand. I love knowing that the work I do here is meaningful.
