Facebook's Annual Take Your Kids to Work Day

Conversation with a 10-year old kid at Facebook's Take Your Kids to Work Day.
“Kid: Do you work here?
Facebooker: Yep. Do you?
Kid: (excitedly) Not yet!”
Facebook recently held its annual Take Your Kids to Work Day at our Menlo Park, California headquarters. We were excited to host parents and their children at this event, specifically designed to share with kids of all ages what it’s like to work at Facebook. The activities showcased Facebook's values and gave kids a more hands-on connection to our mission and culture. Along with the fun train rides and live kid’s music, we incorporated STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) and social good activities for the next generation of builders.
“ “Wonderful day, activities for all age levels. Loved the STEAM focus. Thank you!” –Christine P., Marketing and Brand Strategy Director ”
We offered something for everyone. Kids between the ages of 6 to 18 were encouraged to participate in engineering workshops created and hosted by engineers from Women@ Facebook, one of our Employee Resource Groups. Kids learned basic coding concepts, the binary number system, sorting algorithms, and worked with Scratch, a versatile programming environment. Advanced workshops offered coding exercises in Python and paper-based puzzles that required critical thinking.
Sharing stories through connections is core to Facebook. That's why we introduced Storytelling Lab, a hands-on experience where kids created their own story through whatever medium spoke to them. For some, that included stop-motion animation, costume design, music, or just diving into the many sources of inspiration in the lounge.
We also made social good a major focus of the day. Guests packed snacks for Second Harvest, a local food bank. They also donated diapers to Baby2Baby, which serves local homeless shelters. We also hosted a Social Good Panel where nonprofits talked about their missions, why it's important to give, and ways children can get involved and make big impact. Our partner Schwab had a station with activities that tapped into kids' creative sides while teaching them about saving and giving. For each completed activity, kids received a gold coin that they could donate to Baby2Baby, Second Harvest, Boys and Girls Club of the Peninsula, and Girls Who Code. With every donated coin, Schwab matched it by $1 that was given to each nonprofit.
During this year's event, we set out to build an even more inclusive and supportive environment for those with autism or special needs. Together with Autism Learning Partners, we developed a special space where families could play with sensory toys, games, finger paint or play with bubbles. The room give children a quiet break and a calming place to play.
“ “Families come in all shapes and sizes, and just because your kid behaves differently, or has certain challenges, that shouldn't make them feel less welcome to enjoy and participate with everybody else.” –Carolyn N., Office Lead, Communications, Culture & Events. ”
All in all it was a fun-filled daywhere we successfully shared with FB kids what it means to work at Facebook! “We’re focused on creating a great place to work for our families at Facebook. This program is an opportunity to get children excited about careers that leverage the love of STEAM. Parents get to share why building products to connect the world is important with their kids - inspiring our next generation to dream big.“ –Renee A., Director Life@ Global Benefits
