Facebook's Inaugural Latin Leadership Day

Be the Power and Empower

We recently hosted Facebook's Latin Leadership Day and our theme of 'Be the Power and Empower' encompassed every portion of the event. This was the first time our internal Latin community from Facebook offices across the U.S. came together. Close to 400 people attended this event and their energetic participation was key to the day's success. Attendees walked away feeling more connected to their broader internal support network and equipped with learnings to continue to harness their power and empower their communities.

Highlights

  • Nely Galán - our keynote speaker and former President of Telemundo, stressed the importance of financial security, taking risks and believing in yourself. Key highlights from her speech include, "Opportunities are taken, not given!" and "Make fear and failure your best friend!"
  • Sheryl Sandberg - Chief Operations Officer, hosted an intimate fireside chat with Delfina Eberly, Vice President of Infrastructure. Sheryl had an amazing conversation about several topics and how they impact our Latino community. We're so grateful that she joined us and was a part of these deep and meaningful conversations.
  • Pablo Merheb - Industry Manager, gave a dynamic overview of the Power of Latinos in the U.S. He also dove into how Facebook reaches Hispanic affinity users, and the tremendous population growth and impact that it has and will have on business and culture.
  • Laura Reyes - Diversity Recruiting Leader, had an intimate discussion with our senior Latino leaders as they opened up about their identities, careers, advocating for themselves and for others. Big thanks to our panel participants - Hugo Barra, Aidymar Bigio and Pedro Canahuati.
  • DACA Panel - we heard from three amazing organizations supporting Dreamers and their families, and from our fellow Facebooker Gabriela about her personal story. Their work and the communities they partner with remind us that we have a voice and we need to use it in order to ensure we see positive change.
  • Todd Gaviglio - a local elementary school Principal, spoke about social good and highlighted the importance of giving back to our communities. We'll continue to work with our neighbors and grow our efforts with local schools through the Digital Buddies program and other initiatives.
  • Felix Navarro - Product Support Specialist, performed an amazing spoken word piece focusing on the Power of Authenticity. One of the most memorable quotes from Felix was, "You are now a role model for the next generation. Make sure to find ways to help them along the path that you created for them with your life and your accomplishments." We can only do this by being true to ourselves and who we are. We plan to find time and ways to give back, however small, without underestimating the difference it makes.
We look forward to bringing our Latin community together again in the near future!
