This post was published before the Facebook company became Meta. For the most recent Meta Careers blog posts, visit our blog homepage. Up close and personal, the Amplified Unscripted event series brings together Black leaders at the Facebook company who are influencing company culture, product decision, and community direction. With these virtual and interactive events, we provide a platform for honest dialogue about issues that are deeply relevant and impactful to the Black community.
For our ‘Social Justice From the Executive Seat,’ event, we sat down with Alvin B., Vice President of Global Marketing Partnerships; Judy T., Vice President & Head of Scaled Solutions - Global Business Marketing; Dan R., Vice President of Global Sports and Media Partnerships; and Yael M., Vice President of Engineering, Facebook Connectivity. They shared their experiences around owning their authentic voices, helping create change, and lifting up diverse communities around the world.
Read on for more about what each leader shared.
Advocating for Those Who Don’t Yet Have a Seat at the Table
“I'm grateful to be a leader at Facebook right now—there's nowhere else I'd rather be. I’m driven to do more than I’ve done in the past, because I recognize what it means to have a seat at the table. If I’m in the room, I need to speak up and use my voice to advocate for people whose voices or visions aren’t represented. I view that as an important part of my job. And it’s how we can make sure people who are underrepresented have a seat at the table in the future.
Facebook’s culture empowers me to lead as a Black woman authentically and unapologetically. My experiences and perspective are valued, and I’m able to use my voice to support diverse communities. We recently made a large commitment to Black and Latinx communities to ensure they have the digital skills they need to start a career. As technology continues to evolve, we need to continue to leverage our platform and help communities fight racial injustice.” ––Judy T., Vice President, Head of Scaled Solutions - Global Business Marketing
“I joined Facebook because I was inspired by our mission to bring the world closer together. What I discovered when I joined is an environment where being authentically Black and bringing your unique experiences to the table are welcomed. Throughout the company, there is a real interest in elevating diverse voices and having open discussion. Anyone can raise an issue at the highest level of leadership, and these issues are addressed with legitimate discussion and honest debate. People don't always agree, but the fact that we can have an open conversation is how we bend toward justice.
We need more push for change when Black people are not in the room because having a diverse group of people is not always going to happen. We can develop principles, processes, and procedures, so that it becomes everyone’s job to look at the issues that are related to social justice and underrepresented minorities. This is key to thinking about how we build products, how we take products to market, and how we make decisions, ensuring that diverse businesses or creators have the same opportunities to reach an audience as anyone else.” ––Dan R., Vice President of Global Sports and Media Partnerships
Creating Change from the Inside
“The world feels different now than when I joined Facebook five years ago. This moment in time has opened up many opportunities to lead, especially as a Black leader. Figuring out how to balance advocating for social justice and managing global teams is challenging. But Facebook provides an environment where being vocal and vulnerable about these issues is welcomed. The notion of giving people the power to build is not just something we write on the walls here—this is an environment where we can create real change, and we take that responsibility extremely seriously. The magnitude of impact is both extraordinary and humbling.
Facebook supports diverse communities across the world, and we need people who are reflective of these communities. We’ve made progress, but we need more diverse builders to continue driving global impact.” ––Alvin B., Vice President of Global Partnerships
Lifting up Black Communities, Externally and Internally
“From day one at Facebook, I felt like I could be myself. I feel incredibly lucky that in my day job I am able to focus on lifting up Black communities around the world. There’s a big initiative to advance diversity and inclusion within our infrastructure. For example, we recently announced a project where we will lay down submarine cables connecting East and West Africa. This project will bring more capacity than all the cables around the continent combined today. And it will provide broadband connectivity for hundreds of millions of people, creating economic and educational opportunities.
This has been a critical moment for people— both allies and people of color— to decide what role they want to play when it comes to fighting systemic racism. Oftentimes people don't feel comfortable having conversations around things like career growth, and we are trying to build more structure and process so that people can get uncomfortable and engage in conversations that will help these communities grow. I use the support that I have been given to help drive these conversations and uplift our communities internally, in addition to the work we’re doing externally.” ––Yael M., Vice President of Engineering, Facebook Connectivity
The Facebook company’s Amplified Unscripted events celebrate both the intersectionality and the diverse cultural richness of multiple communities. Through the amplification of diverse voices, we can celebrate our unique perspectives and help bring the world closer together.
