From Student to Employee

We asked four past students who now work in various teams at Facebook how they got into tech and what they work on at Facebook. From the impact they can make to the people they work with, find out why Maya, Rami, Tom and Iris enjoy working here.
“Growing up, everything fascinated me. I didn’t know what I wanted to do after finishing school. I imagined my life going in many different directions: math, psychology, computers, and fitness, to name a few. The moment I realized that technology impacts almost everything in our day-to-day lives, and the versatility of the field, was the moment I decided this is what I wanted to do.
Today, I'm a software engineer at Facebook Israel. I’m working on Facebook Lite, which is a fast and lightweight Android Facebook app designed for people in emerging markets. It is optimized for devices with low RAM, low disk space and basic network connectivity. Working on this project is very challenging, as our products have different efficiency constraints and must provide a good user experience for hundreds of millions of people.
I learn new things every day, from both my projects and the talented people I work with. I love that my job plays on the same curiosity that drew me to the field in the first place. But above all, I love seeing the positive impact our work has on the daily lives of the people that use it in developing nations. It makes me sure that I made the right move in choosing my profession.” — Maya, 2017 intern and software engineer today.
“I grew up in a small village, in a family of strawberry farmers, so tech and computers has been a wondrous world for me, and I wanted to learn as much as possible about this world, which brought me to study biomedical engineering.
After spending a few years in the high tech industry in R&D positions, a new era of data has emerged. I started to explore it, and a year ago attended a data course at Facebook. During the course I felt the same excitement as I did when I first used a computer, I was thrilled to see the impact that data can bring to any industry. To master this world I applied to a Masters degree in statistics, a year later I joined the Facebook growth team as a data scientist.
As a data scientist in the growth team, I drive strategy and roadmaps of a large number of engineers and designers, I perform analysis to understand how the people who use our platforms interact with our products in order to improve their experience.” — Rami, data scientist.
“Last year I graduated my academic degree at Tel Aviv University, in a double major program in Psychology and Computer science, emphasising Neuroscience. Facebook, as being this tremendous social network, seemed like a place where I can combine all of my interests.
I joined the Facebook Lite performance team. Facebook Lite is a 1MB app - a lighter weight version of Facebook, designed to use less battery, bandwidth and phone storage. Our team works towards Facebook's mission to bring the world closer together, by providing the ability to connect and build communities in developing nations and emerging markets.
From an engineering point of view, working in Facebook Lite is quite unique. Things that might be considered 'trivial' in other apps (like switching from screen A to B), may require applying sophisticated and complex algorithms in order to maintain the great performance and 'keep Facebook Lite light' (:
I'm really excited and motivated by the fact that I can write code and improve experience for hundreds of millions of people on a weekly basis. But the reason I enjoy my work the most is my team, I'm surrounded by talented and passionate teammates that I'm happy to meet every morning.” — Tom, software engineer.
“Five years ago, I was struggling to decide what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I knew I want to do something that matters and Facebook was the reason I studied computer science. That one company's mission can change the world and even history, drove me to do my best in becoming a part of this amazing group.
Today I'm part of the Express Wi-Fi team. Our goal is to bring the internet to developing nations. This role helps me to make a real influence on other peoples lives, by giving them the opportunity to connect with the rest of the world. I develop an app that lets people manage their data packs, track their usage and find retailers stores and near access points. We also develop a website that helps our partners to manage customers information such as contact information, sales trends, progress analysis and more.
I still have so much to learn from my co-workers and at the same time, I have much more to give back.” — Iris, software engineer.
We're hiring! We're only 1% done with our journey and are looking for people to join us on our mission to help bring the world closer together.
