Harness the Power of Community with Facebook’s Latinos in Tech

Our mission at Facebook is to bring the world closer together. One way we do this is by supporting employee-run groups that give team members the opportunity to connect with and learn from others in their community. The Latinos in Tech group provides an open and collaborative space for the Latino community to empower and support one another through organized development events, panel discussions, mentoring, recruiting, meetups and more.
Latinos in Tech is made up of employees from many different cultures, who are working on many different teams at Facebook, who truly embrace the power of community. While they share similarities in their backgrounds, they leverage their unique personal and professional experiences to play up each other’s strengths and support each other through challenges.
We had the opportunity to connect with four Latinos in Tech leaders at a recent event, where the group hosted round-table discussions on topics including mentorship, staying true to one’s core beliefs, maintaining work/life balance, and more. Read on to learn more about why community and programs like Latinos in Tech are so important to creating a diverse and inclusive culture.
“Every single community has its unique challenges, and when you get together and start talking openly, real growth and change can happen. I joined the Latinos in Tech program in its infancy to help create a community where we can share our stories and hold each other up. It’s all about providing a space where people feel safe talking about challenges and successes so that we can learn from one another. We hope to continue to grow the program to continue to give people the power to be their true selves, and recognize that the things that make them unique can be positive tools in their careers.”
— Aidymar B., Engineering Director, Messenger Business at Facebook

"As an immigrant, I grew up without the privilege of knowing how to navigate the US education system, which can make things difficult when trying to set yourself up for a successful career. I know there are many people who are in this same position today, which is why groups like Latinos in Tech are such an invaluable resource. Latino people make up a large part of the population, however there’s still a huge gap in the tech industry; we have a social obligation to get involved in any way we can to help lift up those in our community, provide them with opportunities we might not have had, and help them succeed."
— Hector B., Director of Sourcing for Memory & Silicon Products at Facebook

“In my culture, having a close-knit community is incredibly important, and it’s something that’s followed me into my professional life. Really getting to know the people I work with day-in and day-out on a personal level is something that makes work that much more enjoyable for me. Latinos in Tech gives me the opportunity to connect with others who share these same values and understand where I’m coming from. As a minority, it’s incredibly important to have a support system you can relate to and share experiences with.”
— Fernanda W., Director of Production Engineering at Facebook

“Expressing yourself in the workplace is an important part of building strong relationships and advancing your career, but it isn’t easy for a lot of people, especially for minority groups. Latinos in Tech gives people the space to encourage one another to be confident and raise their voice -- even if their perspective is different from those around them. It’s incredibly helpful to get feedback from other people who have traveled the same path as you. There aren’t very many Latinos in tech professions, and even fewer with the profile of a strong technical role model. The membership of this group shows that it can be done.”
