Highlights from Grace Hopper 2017

We just wrapped up Grace Hopper in Orlando, Florida - one of the biggest celebrations of women in technology that brought together over 18,000 attendees to connect, learn, and inspire each other. The Facebook family was there once again to show support for diversity and inclusion in the industry. Here were the highlights from the event.

Before the Conference

We held a Facebook Live with Maxine Williams, Global Director of Diversity, and Debbie Ferguson, Engineering Director (and pilot!) to kick things off from our Menlo Park headquarters. They discussed the importance of Grace Hopper and what it means to be authentic in the workplace.

We also stepped into Debbie's plane to get her advice and perspective on the conference from 600 feet in the air.

Pre-programming

Leading up to the conference, we held 2 days of mentoring, workshops, and talks with Facebook scholarship recipients. Our scholars received invaluable advice from experienced Facebook engineers on how to prepare for a technical interview, how to have crucial conversations, and much more.
We managed to catch up with a few of our mentors to tell us their advice to students and attendees at Grace Hopper.

Conference

To celebrate the start of the conference, we held a Facebook Live from our meet up space featuring Oculus technical program manager Charmaine H and Facebook software engineer Ariane J.

Part 2:

Facebook recruiters and engineers met with attendees to share career advice, conduct onsite interviews, and talk about working at Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Oculus.
We also had special appearances at our booth by our leaders like Facebook Chief Technology Officer Mike Schroepfer, Instagram Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer Mike Krieger, Oculus Vice President Brendan Iribe, and Facebook Global Director of Diversity Maxine Williams.
In lieu of handing out booth swag, Facebook contributed to three nonprofits — Girls Who Code, Black Girls Code, and Hackbright Academy. The organizations focus on supporting and advancing women in tech early in their development through education, mentorship, and community.

Panels, Talks, and Social Gatherings

Facebook engineers and leaders spoke about work, career choices, diversity, workplace challenges, and more.
