Storytelling for Business. Building Resilience. Scaling Yourself. These are the titles of workshops hosted by Women at Reality Labs, a business resource group at Meta. Reality Labs builds the future of human connection at the leading edge of AI, AR and MR with products like Meta Quest and Ray-Ban Meta glasses. As skills-based programs, these interactive sessions support employees on their path to innovation.
Senior leadership at Reality Labs often organizes opportunities for members of Meta to grow their professional skills, including through groups like Women at Reality Labs and internal mentorship programs like Circles. Li-Chen M., VP, Product, created one such program to connect team members of all experience levels to cross-functional leaders to learn and grow together. She describes it as the resource she wishes she had early in her career.
“I intentionally looked for leaders across disciplines so team members can benefit from multiple experiences and perspectives,” Li-Chen explains. “Our group is led by engineers, data scientists, product managers, designers, researchers, marketers, hardware experts and many others who give time and share experiences to guide teammates of all levels and disciplines as they build their careers.”
Julia L., business operations lead, who designed the program with Li-Chen, shares its impact:
“We guide participants and leaders through a curriculum to build relationships, share expertise and learn together. It’s an opportunity to step back to go forward. In between meetings and projects, we don’t always have the time to focus on these topics and conversations. This program is committed to carving out that intentional space over the course of several weeks together.”
Heidi Y., VP, Engineering, serves as one of the leaders of the Circles program and is an executive sponsor for Women at RL. She believes these resources are critical for helping teammates thrive at Meta.
“It’s incredible to have this time to talk in a small group setting to find out what’s top of mind and be able to support them in the moment. I want to ensure that we create an environment that enables team members to thrive. It’s so important to have business resource groups like this to support each other professionally and personally.”
In addition to Circle cohorts, specific skills workshops and community events make a lasting impact on participants. Aakarsha A., Director, Engineering, shares that this business resource group has been a key factor to her experience at Meta. She’s gone from being a participant in events to helping organize gatherings that help others.
“Ever since my first computer science class in high school, I’ve wanted to build the technology that doesn’t exist today. By joining Reality Labs, I found these opportunities. Our strong internal community helped me find my place and uncover opportunities to lead innovative product development.”
Similar community events are offered across Meta. Jennifer D., Director, Program Management, GenAI, serves as a co-lead for Women at Meta and helps organize additional connection opportunities.
“Participating in business resource groups allows me to share my knowledge and experience at scale. This engagement helps influence our products and community in positive ways.”
One of the most meaningful results has been helping participants find their strengths. This is one of the memorable highlights of the program, supported by Christa W., VP, Sales. She explains the exercise:
“Reach out to a few friends or teammates and ask them what they think your strengths are. It’s such a great feeling — like a giant compliment that is all true, but you might not realize it in yourself. Then, you bring it all together and share. The results have been uplifting.”
All of these learnings are applied to future programs to design and build a vibrant culture of innovation for employees in their careers and product work, nurturing community and driving impact within Reality Labs and Meta.
