Inside Product Marketing at Facebook with Goksu

What gets you out of bed in the morning?

I love problem solving and my role at Facebook enables me to be a creative problem-solver on a daily basis either in my individual work or through coaching my team on how to best tackle a challenge. The learning possibilities are endless at Facebook and having a role that enables development of the global economy is very fulfilling. Whenever I see feedback from a customer thanking us for fueling their business, I feel very proud. I know that job creation at a micro level impacts the macro economy and starts a positive cycle.

Describe Product Marketing at Facebook

Our focus is about identifying opportunities in market and working with our Product Management, Engineering, Research, Data Science, Content Strategy, Design and other cross functional partners to bring new products to life. Our teams have a strategic mindset, thinking about the market, user and business needs, as well as undertaking competitor analysis. We take all that information and synthesize it to come up with potential product opportunities. After the product is built, our role is to position it effectively in market. Post-launch we focus on understanding through the use of data and quantitative skills, how the product is trending and how customers are using it to help drive iterations of the product and further drive product-market fit.

How does a Product Marketing Manager have impact at Facebook?

As a PMM, one gets to identify an advertiser's need and then works cross-functionally to address the need with a brand new product, feature or change in the product. There are times when a small tweak enables product-market fit, which is the main contribution a PMM gets to drive impact at Facebook. Whilst we do sit in EMEA, we work with teams as far away as Singapore and Menlo Park with many of the product teams here having a global focus.

What skills does a good Product Marketing Manager at Facebook need?

Given the analytical nature of the role, a good PMM at Facebook needs to be an analytical and data driven decision-maker. The person also needs to have leadership skills that allow her/him to work effectively in a cross-functional environment. Ability to communicate complex, large-scale concepts clearly and simply is a major part of the role. You get to work with a team of colleagues with diverse backgrounds which requires clear communications skills to be successful. Finally, the person needs to be comfortable with a fast-moving, ambiguous environment that requires entrepreneurial thinking. One of my favorite posters at work is “nothing at Facebook is somebody else's problem”. I think it gets to the heart of the skills needed to succeed here.

What impact have you had that surprised you since joining Facebook?

We all know Facebook and the family of apps. That said, until I joined, I did not expect that with the right product/market fit, the products we launch can have immediate seismic return, which is very motivating. For example, last September my team launched a set of products aimed at helping cross-border businesses reach customers around the world. Seeing the massive scale and impact we drove in record time has been one of the most gratifying moments of my career here.

To whom do you look for professional inspiration in your role?

One of my former mentors -- Neil Stevens. Neil a titan European tech, was incredibly smart, driven and charismatic. With all that said, what I appreciated the most about Neil was how much he cared about his people. He was 100% committed to putting his considerable talents and influence towards mentoring others and helping them solve challenges. When required, he had hard conversations with me and told me what I needed to hear. Unfortunately, he lost his battle to cancer in 2015, but his legacy lives on. When I am faced with a big challenge today, I usually take a step back and ask myself “what would Neil have done?”. He remains an inspiration to me.

What’s the best piece of advice you can give someone looking to join Facebook?

Anybody looking to join Facebook should have an understanding of Facebook's 5 core values. People at Facebook truly believe in these values and it underpins everything we do here. It is a shared understanding that will help us achieve our mission. Any prospective candidate should be able to demonstrate where they have shown these values throughout their career.

Three favorite things about working at Facebook?

  • Working with amazing people across the world. Being in London we have the ability to connect not only with our colleagues in London, but also those in Asia and California on a daily basis. This means that I get to work with and learn from some of the brightest and smartest people around the world.
  • The Mission. Our mission is to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected. It is a huge mission and incredibly exciting. Everyone owns this mission in their own way. In my case, I know that what our team builds, helps people learn about businesses from around the world which they might not otherwise have heard of. It also allows businesses to scale through using new products we create.
  • Leadership. Our senior leadership is incredibly open. Each week there is a Q & A hosted by Mark Zuckerberg where any question is fair game. This openness filters down to regional and functional leadership which gives me incredible confidence that we are heading in the right direction to achieve our mission.

Outside of work, what are your passions/pursuits?

Firstly, my family. I am married to Jeremy, and we have a daughter, Isabelle. Our weekends are filled with fun activities as a family. I can proudly say that we have taken Isabelle to most indoor play centres that London has to offer! Second, I am an avid cyclist, but you will not find me on the streets of London. Instead, I love my spinning sessions in a dark studio with upbeat music. I am increasingly keen on managing my own energy and helping my team do the same. I go to an intense spinning class a couple of times a week, and even take the team when our schedules allow. Team spins are truly the best!
