Workplace by Facebook is used by more than 14,000 companies around the world. It enables conversation, collaboration, connection, and productivity so co-workers can get things done. Today we are highlighting some of the people behind the product with a focus on Anand D., head of the Workplace Ecosystems Partnership Team.
Tell us about your role?
I lead Partnerships for Workplace by Facebook. In this role, I wear two hats for North America. I lead our platform partnerships with SaaS leaders such as Microsoft, Salesforce, Dropbox, Box and with emerging enterprise SaaS start-ups. I also lead our go to market and channel alliances with consulting firms and system integrators. Our goal in the near term is to prove that partners will accelerate Workplace's adoption and engagement.
What’s your team like?
Our team, like Workplace, is new. We are a globally distributed team across America, EMEA and APAC. The fun part about the team is that we are building the plane as we are flying it. There is so much to be figured out and built. Everyday brings some new problem to be solved since Workplace itself is a startup inside Facebook that's rapidly growing. Our job is to figure out how we help scale our reach and impact in the world via Partners.
How is Workplace changing the industry?
The the rate of change is accelerating. It used to be that there were set rules in an industry. Winning or losing was dependent on executing against those rules. But it is becoming increasingly obvious that the rules of the game are changing as you play it. How do you organize your business to respond to this new normal?
Part of the answer lies in building an organization that is fluid and able to react quickly. To react quickly, you have to rely on judgement (since patterns and rules will only go so far). To have good judgement, you need information and context. Information and context come from better communication. This is what Workplace brings to the table in an organization. Yes, it has features you would expect from a collaboration and communication tool but it is so much more than that. It is a different way of running a company. Almost like an operating system for how work gets done.
Workplace creates a flatter, more open and connected community inside an organizations where organized chaos can thrive so that the best ideas are surfaced.
What types of people do well at Facebook?
Each team at Facebook is unique. When I joined Facebook, I was surprised by how Facebook still felt like a startup; extreme autonomy and an unrelenting focus on impact. Further, Facebook has managed to attract and assemble a cast of highly motivated, extremely smart individuals who are experts in their field.
To succeed in this environment, the people who are likely to be successful are those who have a high bias for action and are not afraid to pursue the right answer. These tend to be individuals who thrive under chaos and have an ability to extend their impact by working with and through others. Since Facebook is solving big problems in many verticals, there are several people's experiences to learn from.
How did you get into tech? Was there a moment of inspiration or people who propelled you?
I don't think it was specific moment that inspired me to get into tech. It was series of events and fortuitous timing.
I was in high school when the internet became widely available in India. Computers and dialup internet were both slow and expensive. Thus, internet cafe's were the most reliable and affordable ways to get online. Going to an internet cafe was like entering a portal that led to a different world; I could talk to anyone in the world on AOL and MSN messenger, find information from anywhere. I felt untethered and liberated.
Then came the tech & telecom boom of the late 90s. This resulted in large amounts of reliable and affordable communication infrastructure. Suddenly, there was an abundance of jobs in tech since businesses were trying to move everything online. Just as the internet became the new normal, the mobile revolution started. I was in Japan at that time and distinctly remember using the world's first camera phone to send an email with a photo attachment! It was like magic.
This is why tech is incredibly exciting; there is always something upending the status quo. Someone is probably building something magical with the blockchain and VR. What a time to be in tech!
