What did you do prior to joining Facebook?
“I’m originally from Venezuela. I moved to Spain back in 2012 in search of a better quality of life and professional opportunities. I’m a telecommunications engineer and was working with Telefonica International Wholesale in Madrid when Facebook contacted me. At first I wasn’t sure what I could offer Facebook, as my background was in mobile networks.
I learned about Facebook’s connectivity initiatives and the importance of their SMS platform from the trust and safety perspective. Facebook was building a team of engineers experienced in telco to start the very first team in the company focused on providing global support to mobile connectivity initiatives.
I loved the fact that the MOSE (Mobile Operator Support Engineering) team in Dublin was a brand new team representing a new category of business for Facebook, so my family and I moved from Madrid to Dublin, which was a new adventure for us.”
How did you feel about this big career change?
“I moved from a Telco-focused company to a social media company, and it was the best decision I ever made. Facebook really was the type of company I had always wanted to work for, because we literally shaped the mission and vision of this brand new team. We created the entire workflows and processes from scratch.
We started a team in Singapore and later on I moved to Facebook’s headquarters in California to build the team to cover the North America and LATAM regions. Having initially started as a Mobile Operator Support Engineer in Dublin, I’m now the Mobile Operator Support Manager for our office in Menlo Park.”
What are your favorite things about Facebook in Dublin?
“If I’m being completely honest, I have to say that number one is the food! I’m a foodie, and after visiting many Facebook offices around the world, I still believe that Dublin has the very best food.
I love the diversity at Facebook Ireland and it feels like a family. You get to know a lot of people from different teams and from around the world. Facebook in Dublin also hosts so many cultural and professional events. Almost every month there is a band or a musician playing in the cafe just so we enjoy some nice music on a Friday evening.”
What is unique about the work you do?
“The fact that you can do what you want. You have the power to create and innovate on a daily basis. Facebook really empowers you to follow your passion and use your strengths and focus on things you really enjoy. I feel supported and encouraged to go where I want to go.
As a woman working in tech, I have to say that I’ve never experienced the kind of support and understanding that Facebook has provided me through the years. Also, as a Hispanic woman in tech, I’m in one of the most underrepresented minorities in the sector. And I can say that I’ve always been treated as an equal, treated with respect, and supported these past five years at Facebook.”
What does your day-to-day work look like?
“I have a one year-old baby, so my day starts early. It begins with a matcha latte and breakfast at home. Then I normally have a second breakfast at the office! I like booking the first few hours in the morning to focus on my own projects. Most of my work revolves around goal setting and follow-up for the team and engineers, and helping team members move along with their own projects and goals.
As a manager of the Menlo Park team, I normally have meetings with cross-functional leads and I also join specific recurrent meetings and SMS reviews relevant to the products we support. I have 1:1 meetings with my team members once a week, but I always accommodate time for them to discuss anything that’s going on during the rest of the week.
I usually leave office around 4:00PM to be at home by 5:00PM, when my nanny finishes her shift. Sometimes, I have a meeting later in the afternoon to sync with our team in Singapore.”
What other aspects of working at Facebook outside of your core role do you enjoy?
“I really enjoy feeling that I can make a change in the world, as we constantly support our connectivity initiatives. I believe that access to information is essential. I love having the opportunity to feel this impact in building valuable and important experiences for our community.
I also enjoy working closely with my team and feeling that I can make a difference for them. I like to keep myself honest at all times to get the same from my colleagues, and it makes me proud when I feel they trust me and are transparent and open with me in return.”
