Meet Kevin, a Data Engineer on our Analytics team in London

What do you do at Facebook?

I'm a Data Engineer on the Ads Solutions team in London. Facebook is a very data-driven company, and Data Engineering is all about providing that data. This means building data logging, pipelines, tools, frameworks, and visualizations. We work directly with the product team (Software Engineers, Product Managers, and Data Scientists) to first understand the product and then provide easy access to the data that would move that product forward.

Which Facebook value (Move Fast, Focus on Impact, Build Social Value, Be Open, Be Bold) resonates most with your team?

Move Fast. I love that there are no roadblocks, bureaucracy, or red tape blocking us from doing what needs to get done. I have the freedom to set my own agenda and decide for myself what I should build. Trust in each other is the bedrock of our culture, and from that trust flows autonomy and velocity.

What is something most people don't know about working at Facebook?

One of the things that first attracted me to Facebook was the culture of authentic identity. I don't need to have a “work personality” that's separate from who I really am, which encourages me to be myself. This has allowed me to be more open about how I express myself without having to fear how I'll be judged or perceived at work.

Can you tell us about a high-impact project you've worked on recently?

I just had the opportunity to build some core data infrastructure powering a Brands Ads product that we recently rolled out. Not only do my pipelines power our internal decision-making, but they actually feed directly into the product itself.

What are the 3 favorite things about working in FB London?

  • The culture. I know it sounds cliché, but hands down, this is my favorite aspect about working at Facebook. The moment that I stepped foot on campus, I was attracted to the energy, excitement, and enthusiasm of the workplace. Everyone I have worked with deeply cares about the mission/company and this has a contagious effect on the collective outlook and culture.
  • The opportunity to directly contribute to projects that impact the world. It is an amazing feeling to directly see the impact that my work has on our broader community. I don't feel like another cog in the wheel where my work gets lost or obscured up the chain.
  • The autonomy. Facebook is generally a place where people are not going to tell you what to do. We very much have a culture of being self-driven. This means that if you think there is an opportunity to do or build something better, or you find a solution to an issue that you've discovered, then you should feel empowered to do it. There aren't bureaucracies or boundaries to what you can and cannot do. This is one of my favorite things about working at Facebook.

Can you describe the London office culture?

The office still feels like a small company or start-up...and that's a good thing. While it has grown quite substantially over the last few years, the workplace (compared to HQ in Menlo Park) feels intimate and more social/open. I feel like I know (or have seen/met) almost everyone and have had the opportunity to develop friendships with my co-workers at a deeper level than a 'normal' business.
