Meet Susana C., a Network Engineer in our Dublin office

Tell us a little about yourself and your role at Facebook?

I am originally from Caracas, Venezuela and I graduated in 2007 as a Telecommunications Engineer from the Andres Bello Catholic University. Before joining Facebook, I spent a couple of years as a Network Engineer at Amazon and before that I only worked for small companies. Joining Facebook has certainly been the best thing that has happened in my professional career and to this day I continue to learn and grow.
I joined Facebook 3 years ago as a Network Deployment Engineer in Dublin. Our team is in charge of building and scaling Facebook's edge network infrastructure across EMEA, ensuring that people have the best experience possible while interacting with Facebook products. Being a Network Deployment Engineer is really interesting because to be successful at it, you need to be able to blend different disciplines; Network Engineer, Project Manager, Facilities Engineer and a hint of Network Automation.

What impact have you had since joining?

I have been personally involved in several challenging projects such as upgrading all of the backbone network to a new hardware platform, doubling the number of POP sites across the EMEA region and working with the team to design and propose a new way of executing site builds to increase scalability and improve day to day operations. All this work ensures new products such as Facebook Live can be used by anyone and not just celebrities or public figures.
When I started at Facebook our team was very small, so when the team started to grow I became the technical lead and took on more responsibilities such as bringing new team members on board and making sure we had all the tools required to be successful.

You relocated to Ireland, tell us your story?

In 2011 I was living in Madrid, Spain and relocated to Ireland when I was offered a position as a Network Engineer at Amazon. At that time, I wondered what Ireland would be like and how friendly people would be towards immigrants. Starting from scratch in a country where I wouldn't be able to speak Spanish on a daily basis seemed like a big challenge but also an opportunity to learn new things.
After being in Ireland for almost 5 years, I see that I had nothing to worry about. Not only are Irish people very friendly and respectful when meeting people from other places, but also in my day to day life I have the opportunity to work with people from very different countries / cultures which forces you to see things differently and widen your horizons.
From what I have seen with other colleagues and friends joining Facebook and going through relocation; is that Facebook has a whole team that is able to guide you and support you with each step of the way, so I would not worry too much about this part.

What is one thing that most people don't know about working at Facebook?

I believe most people think that to be able to get a job at Facebook you need to be a genius or have a degree from a world class school. They think that it is almost impossible to get a job at Facebook and this is not true, but certainly it does not come for free.
No matter which country you come from, if you have formal education or not, how you dress or how you look, your sexual orientation or religious beliefs; if you are truly good and passionate about what you do then there is probably a place for you here at Facebook.

Facebook Dublin is an office full of people from all over the world, how do the different perspectives/ backgrounds help innovate in your work?

Certainly we have people from all over the world in this office. Just in my team we have people from UK, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Sweden. It is amazing to see the differences between how people live in different parts of the planet, their cultures and ideas is something that definitely makes you grow and see the world differently. This mix is beneficial in an environment like Facebook where you are constantly encouraged to challenge the status quo. The different perspectives certainly play a role when we are trying to solve problems and come up with new ways to work.

Can you share a particular project highlight since joining Facebook that you are most proud of?

On the technical side I could say that doubling our edge network footprint since I joined is one of the things I'm proudest of, we have run many projects with very big challenges that the whole team has been able to overcome to bring the edge network infrastructure to what it is today.
I am also very proud to be the person who helped shape what our network deployment team is today, and the innovation and improvements that our team has developed to improve the way our global team works.

Are you involved in any programs to encourage the next gen of girls/ young women into Tech?

Yes, earlier this year I participated in an event that took place in our Data Center in Luleå, Sweden. We held a field trip day for girls between 14 and 15 years old from a local school, where we gave them a tour around the Data Center and along with other colleagues we presented our work to showcase what type of things we do here. The intention of this program is to broaden their perspective and break a lot of common myths about women in technology as you cannot be what you cannot see.

Facebook relentlessly encourages its employees to focus on their strengths, what impact has this had on you and your team?

Every person is different. Some might be more inclined to do innovation work, others would like to work on coding/automation, others feel happier just executing one project after the other. At Facebook, I think it’s very important that your manager always tries to have in mind what is it that you enjoy doing, and within the capabilities of the team, let you do more of that.
Personally, I enjoy leading projects and getting things done. I also enjoy helping others and making sure they have what they need to do their job.

3 favourite things about working at Facebook Dublin?

  • Being a stone's throw from most European destinations.
  • Having a very short commute compared to other big cities. Not having to spend hours driving every day.
  • Great perks including awesome food and an incredible office space.
