Meet Ursula L., Head of Customer Growth, North America, Workplace

Workplace by Facebook is used in every continent, including Antarctica, in 77 languages. Companies use it internally to communicate, collaborate, connect, and get things done. Today we are highlighting some of the people behind the product with a focus on Ursula L., who leads the Americas Customer Success Team.

Tell us about your role?

I'm the Head of North America Customer Growth at Workplace by Facebook. We work directly with companies who are interested in making Workplace their principal communication channel. In essence, our mission is to help organizations transform the way they work and connect with each employee.

What’s your team like?

My team is comprised of strategic partner managers, each with a unique subject matter expertise. They're each passionate about helping customers find value on Workplace, while contributing to our business goals.

You're hiring. What type of people are you looking for?

  • People who are passionate about driving organizational changes and making work more efficient using technologies like Workpalce.
  • People who bring experience with working with B2B driving transformational projects and growth.
  • People who are passionate about the Facebook mission of bringing the world closer together, and bring a secret super power that can help our team learn and grow globally.

How did you get into tech? Was there a moment of inspiration or people who propelled you?

My sister Deborah introduced me to the tech industry in the late 90’s. She was an account executive at a call center systems integrator, where she helped me land a summer internship. When the internship ended, I was offered a full-time role as a business analyst on the consulting team. I was in charge of helping companies successfully implement call centers.
This professional experience was profound as it shaped my life-long professional interest in helping others solve complex problems through the use of technology.
This position also paved the way for my first mentor, mentee relationship with Joanne H., a director for a client I consulted with. She took the time to provide the guidance I needed at critical moments during that project. Through this relationship, I learned the value of building relationships with leaders who lead by example, take time to coach people and bring something unique that sets them apart.

What's a unique career lesson you can share?

Exposure to a wide range of professional experiences is important to me. It's because of this, that I’ve pursued a diverse set of roles at leading tech companies across marketing, consulting, sales and customer success.
Each of these positions have presented unique challenges. I have learned the value of a well designed an genuine pitch as a result of cold calling hundreds of leads. I have learned the art of negotiating and when to balance making margins and winning relationships. I have learned how to value the time of executives and give examples and tell stories instead of bringing death by PowerPoint. I have learned the value of a well designed process, how to develop methodologies and manage projects in time, within budget and with the allocated resources. Lastly, I have learned that the most important element for technology to make an impact is to consider it's purpose and the people using it and that this in itself is a journey.
Workplace is one of Facebook’s newest products, designed to help organizations foster company culture, openness and connectivity. A natural progression, as Workplace speaks to my passion for enabling community growth through technology. I feel fortunate, as working at Facebook is far more than a job for me. The products we build have impacted me on a deep personal level, enabling me to stay connected with my family in Peru, Spain and Canada. Facebook encourages the hiring of diverse individuals, which resonates with my history.
