Roundtable Chat on Building Impact at Scale With Our Community Operations Team

Lets meet some of our CO team, from left to right we have Anne who joined us in 2014 to support CO in the Netherlands, Jonas who joined from Denmark, Naomi who relocated from the Netherlands as a Dutch Market Specialist, and finally, Ronan, the Market Manager for the Nordics (not pictured above).
We've asked the team to share some insights around their roles and what it's like to like to work at Facebook Dublin.
Jonas (Market Specialist, Danish)

Tell us about yourself and your role at Facebook?

Jonas: I'm a Market Specialist on the Nordic Team, working specifically in support of our Danish Community. It's my role to help create a safe, inclusive community by minimizing the bad experiences for our Danish community. The Market Operations team is tasked with making sure that our platforms remain inclusive and safe for our users, it forms the core of Community Operations at Facebook. As a Market Specialist you are a voice for the community and you come up with solutions that have real-world impact. Social media can be an enormous force for good, but unfortunately it also has the potential to be abused. Bullying, hate speech, sharing of intimate images without consent and financial scams are just a few examples of the type of abuse we have to combat. Clearly identifying and scoping out challenges is a key part of the Market Specialist role. I analyze and report on trends and projects that are most important for the Danish market and will improve the safety and experience of those Facebook users.
Ronan: I studied software systems in the National College of Ireland, after which I began working in an insurance company when I realized my passion for leadership. My next move was working as a contractor at Google. I started off as a Team Lead and progressed to an Operations Manager role where I led an Online Advertising department. I was looking for a role where I could combine my passions for making a difference socially and leading a brilliant team who are also passionate about making the world a better place.
Anne (Market Specialist, Dutch)

What attracted you to join Facebook?

Anne: Despite the growth that we have experienced over the last couple of years, Facebook still has this start-up feel to it. When I interviewed I could sense that this was different, that I would have the freedom and possibilities to work on areas that are important and valuable to me. Besides that, Facebook also invests in the wellbeing of the people that work here. As a member of the LGBT-community, I find it important that I have a safe and supporting environment where I can be myself and meet and celebrate all diversity there is.
Jonas: What attracted me to Facebook was that the company has a broader social purpose. Projects like internet.org (http://internet.org/) and Free Basics really show that Facebook is committed to connecting the world and being a force for good. Connecting parts of the world that are today not connected to the internet, opens up a whole new world of possibilities for the local population in terms of business, healthcare and education. It is giving millions of people tools to help them with their lives. There is also a lot of work going on for longer term solutions such as the Aquila unmanned aircrafts. These are solar powered gliders that will eventually stay up for months and then beam down internet using lasers. How awesome is that?!
Ronan: I joined Facebook 2.5 years ago, and my role has evolved throughout that time. Community Operations is becoming a more exciting place to work as we focus more on driving innovative scalable solutions which involves partnering with many different teams including Engineering, Product and Policy. I love working in CO as we are encouraged to step outside of our comfort zones and grow as individuals and as teams. Our L&D Department run amazing training programs that help us enhance our strengths and realize our potential.

What is something that most people don't know about being a Market Specialist at Facebook?

Anne: What happens in the real world, is happening on our platform as well. In the past, Facebook has applied the mantra of 'Move Fast' and that still really applies to our role! We often discuss situations that push the existing boundaries of our policies and processes so we work together with our XFN partners to come to the right and safe solution for our users. That's why we have Market Specialists, besides speaking the local language, we also provide cultural explanation for what is happening in our country and look ahead to identify potential issues.
Ronan: My role is to lead a team of Market Specialists who are responsible for ensuring that Facebook is a safe place for the Community that they support. They achieve this by using data-driven insights to drive scalable solutions to prevent and action abuse on the platform. Thankfully no day is the same in Community Operations. Every day brings new and exciting challenges. My duties include developing my team, helping them succeed, and leading cross-department improvement initiatives.
In my role, I am also responsible for ensuring that all the cross-functional teams are partnering with Community Operations to achieve our shared goal of making Facebook a safe place. One thing that struck me about Community Operations was how important it is in the grand scheme of things at Facebook. Community Operations is paramount to creating an environment for people to make meaningful connections, and we partner with a wide range of teams.
Naomi (Market Specialist, Dutch)

What do you find most fulfilling about your job, what keeps you here?

Naomi: There's never a boring or same day in this role. We need to stay on top of trends that we see developing across platforms. We also need to be on top of what's in the news in our market, which for me is the Dutch-speaking community. We each have our own areas of expertise that we work on and together we make a great team. I love that I get to have impact on really important areas of work including safety related topics to prevent real world harm, and hiring new talent for Facebook. Because of the diversity that the role entails, I'm always excited for what a new day will bring.
In terms of the city, Dublin is a very multicultural and vibrant city to live in. I enjoy going outdoors and exploring the beautiful nature that is around us as well as experiencing the really fun restaurants and pubs. It's been really easy getting used to life here.
Jonas: The most fulfilling part about the job is definitely that the work we do has immediate impact on our Community in real time. Often people are reaching out for help on Facebook when they are at their most vulnerable, for example in cases like self harm, eating disorders and suicide. When people are struggling with these kind of issues they may not have support they need. We provide localized resources to these people and let them know who they can reach out to in times of crisis. Countless have been helped by letting them know that we care, reaching out to law enforcement, and providing necessary resources and even connecting them to their local relevant charity whom they can talk to in confidence.
Ronan: One initiative my team was involved in was partnering with our Content Policy team to use market insights to optimize our hate speech policies and protect some of the most vulnerable members of our Community including migrants. This work really resonated with me as many migrants' journey start on Facebook, Whatsapp or Messenger. Migrants contact people who help them find a safe place to move to. Then once they arrive in the country, Facebook offers them a way to connect with ready-made communities and helps them settle in with the use of community groups.

You've all relocated to Dublin for your roles, what made you decide to relocate to Dublin and join Facebook?

Jonas: I'm from Denmark but have a pretty international background. I grew up in mostly Luxembourg and then went to university in London. Right out of school I moved half way around the globe and spent three years working at a very well known electronics manufacturer in Seoul, South Korea. Feeling ready for a break I then worked a year in sunny Barcelona and now I'm in lovely Dublin, a city well known as one of big tech hubs in Europe with many international headquarters based here! I'm a big believer in grabbing the opportunities life throws at you and getting to work for Facebook is definitely an opportunity not to be missed. I honestly can't think of a place where you can have greater impact or work with smarter people than here. Most people relocate here for the job so Facebook also does a lot of work to make the transition as smooth as possible when it comes to visas, apartment search and much more.
Ronan, Market Manager

What's your favourite thing about Facebook in Dublin

Ronan: One of my favourite things about working at Facebook is the culture. We are blessed with a huge investment in social good. My favourite day ever at Facebook was Global Causes Day. This was a day when people were given the opportunity to support charities they are involved in or that are close to their hearts. My colleagues and I visited a local children's hospital dressed up as Disney characters and we read them stories.
I also love that there are so many Facebook groups that give us a platform to share our interests and passions. Some of the groups that I am an active member of are: Gigs and Events, Running club, Cycling club and the Social Good group. I have recently set up a Triathlon Club and will begin organizing talks, training sessions, and events.

Outside of Facebook, tell us a little about how you’ve settled into Dublin and what have been the highlights so far.

Naomi: Moving to Dublin was very seamless because Facebook ensures you get everything you need to do the move. The city is really nice and on the weekends, I love going outdoors to explore the beautiful nature and landscapes here. Luckily Dublin is a short fly away for friends from the Netherlands so it's been really nice hosting my friends and showing them Ireland!
Anne: When I moved to Dublin, I didn't know anyone, but that wasn't a problem. You start off with a group of people, from all different departments in an introduction week. This means instant friendships, which grows in the months after. Also, Dublin is really small, sometimes it feels like a village. It is impossible to go shopping on a Saturday and not run into someone you know. Coming from the Netherlands, Ireland has completely different landscape. In the past three years I made a lot of road trips around the country, seeing the most amazing places and meeting new people. Cities like Galway and Cork are a nice getaway from Dublin, with still a busy nightlife!

What’s the best piece of advice you can give someone looking to join the Facebook?

Jonas: My best advise would be to make sure you highlight your strengths during the interview process. The interviewers want to hear details of any impressive work you've done so make sure to bring it up. At Facebook we are always encouraged to be our authentic selves so as an applicant you should too! We're much more interested in hearing what motivates you to come to work everyday and why you have applied specifically to Facebook. For Market Specialist I would recommend that you spend some time reading up on the Community Standards (www.facebook.com/communitystandards) and on news related to content at Facebook. Knowing about concrete examples from your market is sure to impress the interviewer!
