What Makes Being a Recruiting Manager at Facebook Different Than Other Companies?

At Facebook, our recruiting teams are an integral part of what makes Facebook a unique and special place to work. Our recruiting teams propel us to grow at a rapid rate by hiring the world's best talent. They are consulting partners to our hiring teams and they influence decisions with leadership, provide thoughtful recommendations and work with cross-functional teams. Jessica T., a Recruiting Manager in our new San Francisco location decided to join Facebook because she wanted to make an impact in a growing organization with values and a mission that were meaningful to her.

Why did you join the recruiting team at Facebook?

I've been in the recruiting industry for close to 20 years, spanning across various roles and industries. After 10+ years in the public accounting field, I did some soul searching and took a close look at what I wanted the next 10 years to look like. I have two kids, and in order for me to make my time away from them worthwhile, it was important for what I was doing on a daily basis to tie into something that was important both on a personal level, and positively impacting the world.

What makes being a recruiting manager at Facebook different than other organizations you’ve worked at?

Facebook is an amazing company to work for and is distinct as a genuine values and mission-based company. Our mission to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together, coupled with our values, tie back into everything that we do at all levels and in all areas of the organization. They are shared, and translate in our relationships with our stakeholders, leadership, and peer groups across teams. This aspect of Facebook ties directly back to the reason that I joined, and reinforces my decision on a daily basis. Facebook is a strengths-based company, which means that we want people to be doing work that they enjoy and plays to their strengths. Our leadership team is large and diverse enough to honor everyone’s strengths and areas of interest. I feel that my strengths are recognized, honored and celebrated and the majority of my work is work that I truly enjoy. This cascades out to my team as well and I’m empowered to ensure that my team is spending the majority of their time on work that is important, plays to their strengths, and is impactful to their growth and development.

Have your expectations matched your experience?

My expectations have been exceeded here at Facebook, and 11 months later, I’m still thrilled I joined the team. One of the main reasons that I accepted the role here instead of other offers was related to the growth trajectory at Facebook. I expected there to be great growth and opportunity but have been floored by the actual growth that we’ve experienced since I’ve joined. My team has quadrupled in under a year!

What keeps you at Facebook?

I love the people at Facebook. I was really nervous about commuting to an office everyday after several years of working remotely. I absolutely love coming into the office and working with my team. The energy and intelligence across the entire company is invigorating and inspiring. I truly feel that I’m making an impact on my team, for our stakeholders and for Facebook as a whole. I’ve never felt as closely tied to a mission as I do now.

What piece of advice would you give to someone interviewing for a recruiting manager role at Facebook?

Show up as your genuine and authentic self. Don’t give canned answers to questions or tell us what you think we want to hear. As a strengths-based company, we have great opportunities for people with all different strengths and areas of interest. Understanding your genuine perspective will help us to find the right home for you.

What do you want to share with candidates who are considering applying to Facebook?

When I was interviewing at Facebook, I had some anxiety, which I think might be shared amongst the greater population. I had the misconception that Facebook is a really hard place to find a work/life balance. I came from a role where I worked 100% from home with incredible flexibility, which was a dreamy lifestyle for a mom of 2 young kids. When I decided that I was going to trade some of that flexibility for work that I was more passionate about and a company I was more closely aligned with, I was really nervous about how commuting and being in the office much of the time would impact my family. I have found Facebook to be an incredibly caring environment and have felt nothing but support for my needs and balance outside of the office.
