Gal, an Engineering Manager on Internet.org

What are you currently working on at the moment?

Internet.org is a Facebook initiative to connect the world to the internet. There are 4 billion people with no internet connectivity today, and we work with mobile operators on ways to provide connectivity and affordability of the internet to all. We have seen the deep impact on the people we help connect to the internet, 1 in 10 would find a new job, get knowledge on health, agriculture etc. we are a part of a truly amazing technological effort – from enhancing mobile operators technology to provide affordable data, to providing wifi access to rural villages that needs to withstand hard climate conditions and lack of energy, to satellites and Facebook's own UAVs that can bring connectivity to the furthest places on earth. We're already available to 1.8 billion people, and it is truly amazing to work on a program that touches so many people and changes the world.

What is the impact you're most proud of to have contributed to?

As Facebook teams are pretty small, everyone has a unique opportunity to help guide your own project efforts on the technological and product aspects. As an Engineering Manager in Internet.org. I'm super proud of making the program successful and reachable to so many people. We have seen farmers save their livestock due to medical and agricultural information and guidance they got through the program, people communicating with loved ones and new businesses and jobs created.

What is unique or motivating about your project at Facebook?

Being able to touch and impact people, work on a product that I truly believe in to make people's live better. Not yet another same old kind of product…

Which Facebook value (Move Fast, Focus on Impact, Build Social Value, Be Open, Be Bold) resonates most with your team?

Be bold – we're attempting at a program in a very large global scale, with many challenges. We're aiming at creating and inspiring new models to be able to connect the internet. It has never been done before in such a scale, and already has proven to be the best program to successfully connect people to the internet. We're just getting started!

If there was one word or phrase that describes your team culture, what would it be and why?

Self-managed, motivated group of people that care deeply on both value to users and loves challenges.

What's the best Facebook event you went to?

Every year we have an engineering gathering across EMEA, where we get a chance to share and learn all of the cool work done across EMEA. From Workplace by Facebook that would help other organizations create an efficient and open communication and collaboration internally, to cutting edge, biggest of its kind, data centers architecture and technology, and all the other projects worked on in EMEA. It’s really cool to meet fellow engineers and share technology, tools, challenges, wins and lessons learned.

What do you love the most about working at Facebook?

The people – no politics, no ego, very few meetings. Working with great people that support each other's growth and impact on super cool projects.

Can you tell us a bit about Hackathons?

I have never seen this done so well in previous companies, and it’s really cool. We do 24 hours straight every other month, and most hacks are an actual improvement to a piece of code or product we don't work on, on our day to day. Lots of them get shipped to production. Nothing in Facebook is someone else's problem, and so whenever I see something that could be better in the Facebook platform or even on internal tools, we just code it better at the next hackathon.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Facebook, as long as my impact, personal growth, fun and challenge continues!
