At Meta’s Reality Labs Research, our goal is to make world-class consumer virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. Come work alongside industry-leading scientists and engineers to create the technology that makes MR and AR pervasive and universal. Join the adventure of a lifetime as we make science fiction real and change the world. The Optics, Photonics, and Light Systems (OPALS) Research Team is looking for a Research Scientist with passion for innovation and scientific rigor in the development of exposure methods, architectures, and processes for the purposes of patterning novel photonic devices (Example: holographic elements, waveguide combiners, metastructures, etc). Our team mission is to innovate and prototype immersive augmented reality (AR) display technology concepts towards beyond-state-of-the-art near eye displays for consumer devices. You will also have cross-functional duties with optomechanical engineering, materials development, device and system design, systems engineering, integration, and metrology and characterization for closed-loop-analysis of fabricated devices, as well as facilitating the development of test plans for various leading-edge optical device concepts. You will join a highly cross-functional team tasked with concept innovation, design, development, and prototyping of optical components to support future AR optics productization. This role requires close collaboration with internal cross functional partners and external vendors to define and deliver complex solutions to support process development, quality control and performance optimization. You will receive full support from the management and leadership team to grow your technical skills and career.
Research Scientist, Holographic Exposure and Process (PhD) Responsibilities
  • Develop, build, optimize, calibrate, characterize, and troubleshoot new optical tools and processes for fabricating optical components and systems with holographic materials.
  • Engage and collaborate cross-functionally with metrology/characterization, materials, and design team members to: co-optimize device and process, establish a fundamental understanding of as-built physical optics, identify and validate sources of gaps in desired display performance, and address the key technology gaps and mature technology towards productization.
  • Collaborate with optomechanical engineers to develop specification documents for system and sub-components and engage with external suppliers as well as identify needs and plans for creation of custom solutions.
  • Manage external partnership with vendors and instrument manufacturers to enable and validate new components and technologies.
  • Troubleshoot and optimize existing fabrication processes and technologies.
  • Collaborate with research teams and lab management in planning, executing, and evolving exposure platforms and processes.
  • Partner with cross functional teams, technical program managers and leadership to devise and execute on the program priorities.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience. Degree must be completed prior to joining Meta
  • Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, a PhD degree in Engineering, Optical Sciences, Physics, Optical Materials, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience. Degree must be completed prior to joining Meta.
  • 1+ year(s) of experience in academic or industrial setting in design, development, and testing of custom optical exposure methodologies and processes.
  • 1+ year(s) of experience in the fabrication and functional testing of novel photonic devices such as metastructures, photonic integrated circuits, holographic elements, diffractive, refractive structures, etc.
  • 1+ year(s) of experience in academic or industrial settings with scientific programming languages such as MATLAB, Python, Mathematica, or similar.
  • Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 3+ years of experience in academic or industrial setting in design, development, and testing of custom optical exposure methodologies and processes.
  • 3+ years of experience in design, fabrication and testing of novel optical structures such as metastructures, holographic elements, sub-wavelength diffractive structures, etc.
  • 3+ years of experience in hardware prototyping (e.g., bench prototyping, basic electronics, and software system integration).
  • Experience with optical system design software such as Zemax, FRED, etc.
  • Background in nanophotonics with rigorous electromechanical modeling experience, such as with COMSOL, Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD), Rigorous Coupled-Wave Analysis (RCWA), etc.
  • Experience working and communicating cross-functionally in a team environment.
  • Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, as well as first-authored publications at leading workshops or conferences.
