The Metaverse Optical Systems Engineering Team is looking for an optical systems engineer to develop and lead development and release of our Display & Optics systems for Meta products. You will work cross-functionally with optical, mechanical, camera, display, DFx and other teams to ensure the performance and realization of optical products. You can handle a high degree of ambiguity in product definition, play a critical role in the product engineering process, including product definition, scoping, task management & prioritization, rollout and launch. You make the right engineering tradeoffs in the context of a wider product or project goal. You make the team more effective by bringing in best practices, identifying & removing bottlenecks, as well as avoiding common pitfalls. Other engineers and managers look to you for your experience and expertise in the product development process.
Optical Systems Engineer Responsibilities
  • Work closely with the quality, test engineering, and technical operations teams to drive architected systems into mass production for electro-optical and electro-mechanical designs, system integration and verification including control software.
  • Identify new concepts, develop and lead new innovative processes, assembly and integration of technologies and control systems that improve optical performance and system cost.
  • Distill product-level requirements to optical system design and requirements. Perform requirement flowdown and budgeting to various subsystems.
  • Drive the optics, display, mechanical, electronics, software and other cross-functional engineering teams to define, develop, realize, and simulate a variety of optical systems.
  • Create and maintain engineering specifications. Specify key performance indicators, test methods, and test requirements for components and systems. Work closely with domestic and international vendors.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Optical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical discipline.
  • 3+ year of product development industry experience.
  • Experience with Optical Systems, and general knowledge of optics including imaging, illumination, radiometry and colorimetry, physical and geometric optics, and polarization.
  • Proven record in developing complex systems involving optics, mechanics, and automation. Experience working with system-level prototyping work, including hands-on prototyping of bench-top optical components.
  • Experience with optics technologies with one or more of the following: AF camera actuator (e.g. VCM), digital zoom lens, image stabilization OIS technology, scanning based display, physical optics, computational optics, holography, Image quality evaluation, Stray light molding and analysis, lens testing and characterization, Imaging optics design and manufacturing, Illumination optics design and manufacturing, Visual Optics, or Optical testing and metrology. radiometry, and photometry.
  • Experience working, communicating, and collaborating in a cross-functional environment with minimal direction and working with uncertainty and directing cross-functional partner teams to manage the risk portfolio at different stages of product development.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Software or a related technical discipline.
  • 5+ years of consumer product / industry experience.
  • Experience in design for manufacturing design for cost, quality control and statistical analysis using JMP, Matlab, or similar programs.
  • Experience with display and sensing components, such as near-eye displays and sensors.
  • Experience in development of optical systems and prototypes in a team environment across a diverse set of disciplines including Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, and Optics.
