At Meta Reality Labs Research, our goal is to explore, innovate and design novel interfaces and hardware subsystems for the next generation of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. We are looking for a skilled Opto-Mechanical Engineer to join our team, whose mission is to design, build, and test future consumer AR experiences. As part of our team, you will develop state of the art opto-mechanical system components, camera or display systems, mechanisms, and solutions for next generation research devices. You will become part of a team chartered with the exploration of new concepts through analytical modeling and fast iterative prototyping. A wide range of approaches will be explored combining electrical, mechanical, firmware, and software techniques. We want people who work well in teams, can brainstorm big ideas, experience working in new technology areas, drive a concept into a prototype, and can envision how a prototype could transition into a high-volume consumer product.
The candidate will be responsible for the opto-mechanical design of camera imaging systems and AR eyepiece elements (waveguides + projectors) that have an impact on future AR products at Meta. Additionally, the candidate will participate in developing associated manufacturing processes that solve complex design challenges. This individual will work closely with optical, mechanical, process, simulation, and reliability engineers. Additional collaboration with research scientists, project managers, operations, and international suppliers will be required to develop designs / processes / tools from the concept stage to engineering validation builds. The candidate should continuously develop personal knowledge and expertise in new technology for AR systems and related design, process, and manufacturability topics.
Opto-Mechanical Engineer Responsibilities
From concept to completion, design the opto-mechanical systems in collaboration with internal and external partners that meet mechanical, optical, and reliability requirements
Drive end-to-end discussions on camera, display system down-selection, prototyping, equipment, and tooling for high precision manufacturing and assembly
Drive design and DFM reviews related to: mechanical control outlines, mechanical and optical interfaces, dimensional and optical specifications and tolerances, cosmetics, and product performance
Drive FMEA, failure analysis, tolerance analysis, gauge R&R, and the GD&T activities supporting product scalability
Design, execute, and analyze experiments that inform design decisions and process development
Work closely with external equipment manufacturers, part suppliers, and integrators to support technology deployment and product development
Apply engineering expertise in the areas of opto-mechanics, precision manufacturing, metrology, and tooling design
Drive vendors and CMs to provide data analysis and reports of design and process performance
Drive in-field failure analysis of performance gaps of equipment
Document best practices, SOPs, and cost models by working closely with various cross functional teams
