Join the adventure of a lifetime as we make science fiction real and change the world. The Cameras & Depth group is looking for a world-class camera characterization/validation engineer to support the development of next generation CV and RGB cameras. The successful candidate will be part of the camera team innovating, developing and integrating hardware and algorithms for future generations of HMD devices.
Camera Validation Engineer Responsibilities
  • Develop, validate, and characterize imaging systems through objective and subjective image quality analysis.
  • Design and implement new test setups and algorithms for image quality evaluation.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure test readiness, including test chart and condition design, algorithm implementation, and hardware bring-up.
  • Develop and execute camera validation and test plans in coordination with vendors.
  • Creating automation test scripts, implement metric algorithms, and conduct data analysis using C/C++, Python, or MATLAB.
  • Manage data collection, processing algorithm development, test automation, and result reporting.
  • Manage external vendors for test setup, design validation, design reviews, and production ramp-up.
  • Conduct camera debugging, root cause analysis, and problem-solving to support product development.
  • Communicate and report key deliverables to cross-functional teams to drive design improvements.
  • Travel up to 25% domestically and internationally as required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Photography, Imaging Science, Color Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in image and video quality testing, including metrics, algorithms, and evaluation methods for benchmarking or camera characterization (sensor, lens, module, and device).
  • Hands-on experience in developing, implementing, and troubleshooting image quality test infrastructure, including hardware, test charts, software, automation, opto-mechanical components, motion control stages, precision alignment components, optical filters (e.g., bandpass, IR cut-off), and lenses.
  • Proficiency in using evaluation platforms such as DXO, Imatest, and IQ Analyzer.
  • Experience with MATLAB, Python, or C/C++ for operating lab systems, implementing algorithms, automating lab processes, and handling data collection and analysis.
  • Knowledge of camera module fabrication, including how component performance and assembly processes impact overall camera performance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Proficiency in statistical data analysis and familiarity with camera data analysis methodologies, including JMP.
  • Hands-on industry experience with Augmented Reality (AR) or Virtual Reality (VR) products.
  • Experience in lens and opto-mechanical design, including tolerance analysis and stray light evaluation.
  • Background in high-volume production and test environments.
  • Experience with lens metrology tools such as TriOptics ImageMaster HR, OptiCentric, Pro9/Pro10, as well as optical system metrology techniques, including colorimetry, photoradiometry, integrating spheres, and spectrophotometry.
  • Practical experience in prototyping with macro-scale imaging test targets, interfacing fixtures for sensor devices, and integrating off-the-shelf optomechanical components (e.g., Thorlabs, Edmund, Newport).
  • Demonstrated experience in sensors and optics, including their evaluation methodologies.
