At Reality Labs Research (RL-R), our goal is to explore, innovate and design novel interfaces and hardware subsystems for the next generation of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. We are looking for an experienced Battery Research Scientist to join our team. We are specifically seeking a candidate to define and drive a lithium-ion battery research technology roadmap and lead a team of researchers to develop advanced batteries for next-generation XR devices, from concept to advanced prototypes.
Tech Lead, Battery Research Responsibilities
  • Lead a research team to develop advanced lithium-ion batteries for next-generation XR devices, from concept to prototype.
  • Define a lithium-ion battery research roadmap and drive execution with leading research and manufacturing partners.
  • Transfer promising technologies from Research to Product
  • support NTI and NPI projects.
  • Manage a battery research laboratory
  • coordinate capital project planning, execution, and lab safety.
  • Develop electrochemical models of Li-ion batteries and cell components. Use simulation to inform research roadmap and guide project execution.
Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD degree or equivalent experience in Physics, Chemistry, Material Science, Chemical, Material, or Mechanical Engineering, or similar discipline or equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years industry experience in project leadership for battery development
  • 5+ years industry experience in battery development for EV or consumer electronics devices.
  • 5+ years industry experience in developing physics-based battery models for consumer electronics or electric vehicles
  • 5+ years experience designing and executing experiments for model parameterization and validation.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated proficiency in leadership and project management
  • Experience with battery cell materials, chemistry, and manufacturing processes for consumer electronics
  • Experience with electrochemical cell characterization, cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and familiarity with Maccor/Arbin or other equivalent testing systems.

$177,000/year to $251,000/year + bonus + equity + benefits

Individual compensation is determined by skills, qualifications, experience, and location. Compensation details listed in this posting reflect the base hourly rate, monthly rate, or annual salary only, and do not include bonus, equity or sales incentives, if applicable.
