In February 2018, three friends started Beat Games, an independent gaming studio out of Prague, Czech Republic. They created Beat Saber, an innovative virtual reality (VR) experience that blends music with physical movement. In just one year, the game sold over a million copies, and in November 2019, it was acquired by the Facebook company. In March 2020, Beat Saber went double platinum.
Today, Beat Games is a part of the Oculus Studios team and operates out of their offices in Prague. With support from Meta and Meta Quest, Beat Games is working at the cutting edge of VR to connect people through music and movement.

Paving a path for the future of VR computing

“When we started Beat Games, it was myself, Ján and Vladimír. Our journey since then has been very organic, from our growth to the acquisition. We worked closely with Oculus since the beginning, so when we were acquired by Facebook, the transition felt natural. The core of Beat Games—our culture, work and values—remains the same. We have the trust and creative freedom to continue building our vision, and Meta’s resources to help us scale and continue making a meaningful impact in the VR industry.
It has been incredible to see Beat Saber grow to become one of the most popular games in VR. As we build new features and new experiences, it’s critical we get it right. Because we have a lean team, everyone has the opportunity to own projects from design to execution.
When the PC first came to market, it was a groundbreaking technology that gave people the ability to compute and display images on a 2D screen. With VR, we can take images from screens to 3D reality and experience computing in a completely new way. Working at Beat Games means having the opportunity to work on projects in an emerging field, build and bring brand new experiences to life on a growing platform, and set trends that will help shape the future development of computing.”—Jaroslav B., Co-Founder and Head of Music, Beat Games

Using the power of VR to connect people in meaningful ways

“As the marketing lead for Beat Games, I work closely with the Meta Quest team to build our community, share our story, and of course, drive VR adoption. What makes my job even more exciting is the fact that I love Beat Saber and I play it almost every day. I also appreciate the opportunity to work with many talented people inside our team and at Meta. Everyone at Meta is so helpful and ready to help with any issue or challenge. Meta also has a wealth of knowledge for us to tap into, from mentoring and coaching, to courses, virtual classes and articles.
Beat Saber is much bigger than a game—it’s a community that connects people based on their love for music and gaming. It’s inspiring to see people in all parts of the world build connections through our game. People are meeting online in the leaderboards and at our offline events. We’ve hosted events for people in Germany, Los Angeles and other parts of the world to meet in-person, and our community members have also organized their own meetups. Even now, amidst this global pandemic where many people are stuck at home, Beat Saber gives people the chance to engage with one another and be part of something exciting.
Working at Beat Games has changed my life. I never imagined I’d be working on a project with such a global impact from the center of Europe. The opportunity to create something that is leading the VR industry from a small studio in Prague is rewarding and humbling. Beat Saber is proof that with a passionate team and a smart and simple concept, you can make a huge breakthrough.”—Michaela D., Head of Marketing, Beat Games

Finding a magical connection with the team and feeling at home in Prague

“Reflecting on my journey to Beat Games, it often feels like the stars aligned. Living in Stockholm, I was looking to make a change and in search of more sun. Prague is an incredible place! It’s walkable and full of friendly people who help you feel at home in the community. As a designer, this inspires me. So from a work perspective, joining the Beat Games team in Prague felt magical.
There are so many things that make this team special: open communication, honesty, and support—no matter a person’s work style or perspective. Everyone has a voice, and every opinion matters. I love our daily team check-ins and design calls with developers because we get to see the impact of our ideas.
I appreciate that we don’t have a long approval process or a large number of stakeholders here because we can make quick and meaningful changes to the game. Working with Virtual Reality (VR) often feels like building the future. I believe in it’s huge potential and that we’ll use it daily one day.”—Natalia P., Designer, Beat Games

Tapping into creative freedom to take Beat Saber to the next level

“When you work on a game that millions of people love, you feel personally motivated to continue to find ways to inspire the people who play it. This is what I enjoy most about my work at Beat Games. As we grow, we’re constantly challenged to bring Beat Saber to the next level and elevate the experience for players while staying true to our brand. It’s an exciting problem to solve.
While much of my work as a 3D artist is spent collaborating with our co-founder and Creative Director, Ján Ilavský, I love having the freedom to run with ideas and bring them to life. It’s rare to have the opportunity to work at this scale and still be able to fully exercise your creativity. Ján is a doer, and he leads by example. Our culture of “doing” has a snowball effect throughout the company, and it’s one of the reasons we’re able to see the impact of our work so quickly. I still remember when, just a few weeks after I joined the team, I made a suggestion that was quickly implemented into the product. I’m continually amazed by the speed and fluidity of decision-making here.
Working at Meta also gives us a window into the future of where VR is going. Mark Zuckerberg has an incredible long term vision for that future. Combining it with our creative freedom gives us the opportunity to shape an exciting new chapter for Beat Games.”—Mike W., 3D Artist, Beat Games
