A window to the world, Facebook empowers people and businesses alike to build community and bring the world closer together. More than 80 million small businesses around the world rely on Facebook to maintain an online presence, communicate with customers, and drive transactions, and over 1.6 billion people globally are connected to a small business on Facebook.
Every day, the Global Business Group (GBG) at Facebook helps over 6 million advertisers, including small businesses, to connect with their customers and communities. The team empowers businesses to be customer-centric to achieve real business results, penetrating the limits of distance, time, and space.
How exactly does the GBG team help small businesses? Meet some of our colleagues from our Greater China GBG Account and Partner Management team for a deep dive into how they are working with small and medium businesses to grow their impact and build community globally.
Amanda C., Director of Account and Partner Management, Greater China

How does your team contribute to Facebook’s mission of bringing the world closer together?

My team's long-term strategic aspiration is to serve every small and medium business (SMB) in the Greater China region by connecting them with people around the world to grow their businesses.

Working together with many internal cross-functional partners, we empower SMBs to gain useful digital skills that can help grow their businesses. As Sheryl Sandberg has said about the importance of SMBs, “Small business owners are some of the most dedicated entrepreneurs, and they are the heart of every economy and create the majority of new jobs throughout the world.” We need more small businesses to leverage our tools and platforms, invest more, and grow quickly!

What is one of your team's highlights for 2018?

We expanded the MadeByTaiwan program through a long-term partnership with Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) to help the local businesses bring their products to the world through tailored resources and training programs. Since its launch, we've trained more than 1,000 business owners across Taiwan and equipped them with the digital skills they need to build their businesses.

“ Small business owners are some of the most dedicated entrepreneurs, and they are the heart of every economy and create the majority of new jobs throughout the world.””

What are the career opportunities for people interested in joining the Account and Partner Management Greater China team?

Greater China is the fastest growing region in Asia Pacific, and we have a range of job opportunities in account management, partner management, and business development. These roles are about helping SMBs grow through solutions such as Facebook Pages and advertising, specifically in acquisition, marketing, sales, and partnerships. As a team, we are one big family that is based in the Facebook Singapore office. My team members will be sharing in-depth about what they do in their roles, so do read on!
Claire C., Team Lead, Reseller Partner Management, China

How do you make impact as a team lead and manager?

I support, encourage, and embrace cognitive diversity, especially as in Greater China where we tripled the size of the team to help SMBs grow rapidly, globally. To better work with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds, we have to create a culture of inclusiveness and support people to find and develop opportunities, and grow their strengths.

What are the top three skills/attitudes for anyone to be successful on the team?

1. Passionate about the dynamic of SMBs. Our mission is to help SMBs grow their business, understand our clients, and tailor our consultation for the solution that suits them best.
2. Ability to analyze and effectively prioritize opportunities. Vibrant SMBs with various opportunities always make us excited—fast-growing e-commerce/gaming companies in China, diversified local businesses in Taiwan, global brands with untapped potential in Hong Kong. These are only some examples. As high performers ourselves, we expect to spot opportunities, seize the low hanging fruit, and grow our portfolio. Staying focused on priorities and delivering impact are crucial to doing our job well.
3. Ability to manage uncharted territory by coping with uncertainty, risk, and change. “Move fast” is one of Facebook's core values, which is how Greater China businesses operate, as well. There are a lot of opportunities awaiting us to explore and experiment, and we expect everyone to have strategic planning skills and be able to take on risk with a long-term vision. .

You've been at Facebook for three years. Can you share more about your career journey and growth?

My interest to help SMBs grow has enabled me to learn the industry ecosystem from different perspectives (for example, from platform to brand to the partner side). The skillsets I have acquired from the rich experiences are invaluable! When I first joined Facebook, I was an Account Manager focusing on marketing and data analysis to grow the Taiwan and Hong Kong e-commerce vertical. However, Facebook's open culture, clear expectations of different roles, and the full autonomy (not to mention full confidence) given to us has encouraged me to develop my capability in creating business opportunities, as well as to learn and level up people-oriented skills
Lu Wang, Account Manager, Greater China

How do you make an impact in your role as an account manager?

As a partner to our clients, we first learn to understand their needs, show love and empathy, grow the relationship, then help them achieve their goals. This is the foundation of any work we do.
Facebook is a fast-moving place with lots of new ideas and new services popping up all the time. As we build the foundation of our client relationship, we proactively find the special things we could be doing for the client. To keep me focused on things that matter, my peers and managers give me honest feedback and suggestions. The benefits from all this impact upon my role as an account manager as I strive to do my best always.

Please share your experience relocating from China to Singapore.

The relocation process was very smooth. Facebook took care of everything—from shipping my personal stuff to looking for a new apartment. All steps were well considered and my Facebook recruiter guided me every single step of the way. She even recommended food that I should not miss in Singapore!
Facebook's office culture is warm and inviting. We have team dinners and celebrations regularly. I quickly adapted and became a part of the family without hesitation!
Michael C., Business Development Manager, Greater China

How do you make an impact in your role as a business development manager?

Over the past two to three years, we've made Facebook popular all over the Greater China region by developing relationships with dozens of new partners, organizing hundreds of new online and offline activities, and acquiring thousands of new advertisers.

What is the one phrase that best describes your team and why?

At Facebook, we are the pioneers in exploring new opportunities and experimenting with new solutions. Being at the forefront has made us the experts of the local network and export industries.

How have you grown at Facebook?

During the past three years, I have tried three different roles. Each one was new for the GBG team. I was the first account manager to focus on gaming and the first partner manager on the China team. Today, I am in business development. So I am grateful for the experience and exposure I've gotten during my three years here, as it would probably be equivalent to five years in another company!
The culture at Facebook is such that because we are faced with challenges every day, we need to be “自带燃料”—yes, self-fueled! We believe that our mission and products will help many Chinese SMBs to go global—and successfully at that! So it is not only managing a relationship with your client, but working together in true partnership. This principle, which I believe strongly in, has helped me to convince partners to invest in Facebook. Remember, believe what you are doing. This is how you refuel and motivate others by example.
