Shigeo relocated from Japan to Singapore seven months ago to take up a new role as a Publisher Development Manager at Facebook. We interviewed him to learn about his experience working at Facebook and relocating to a new country.

Tell us about yourself and your role at Facebook?

I am a Publisher Development Manager for Japan in the Audience Network team at Facebook. We help publishers to monetize and create engaging advertising experiences. The Audience Network team has cross functional roles with other teams in Facebook, and so we collaborate closely with them on our projects. We work with different teams such as the sales team in Tokyo, and the gaming team in Singapore, to market and sell a holistic suite of products and services to publishers. Our engineering team is based in London, and we also work closely with them to develop new mobile web solutions.
My key role is to maximize the revenues of publishers, as I am the point of contact for them. Apart from that, I am the lead for new mobile web solutions in Asia Pacific. I consolidate all demands and feedback on mobile web solutions from the region, and work with the London team to develop solutions that are aligned with market demands.

What impact have you had since you’ve joined Facebook?

I had joined Facebook as the first Japanese speaking Publisher Development Manager. This had helped us build closer ties with our Japanese clients as they were able to better communicate their needs to us, and it resulted in accelerating the expansion of our business in Japan.
Before Facebook, I had worked in the same industry in Japan, which enabled me to use the right market information and insights to build our go-to-market strategy. I’m proud that I’m able to acquire new clients and increase the revenues of existing clients in just three months of joining Facebook!

You relocated to Singapore for this role. Tell us your story?

I have previous experiences in working at a domestic Japanese company and an American branch office in Japan. Hence, relocating to Singapore for Facebook was a very natural step for me as I was ready to work for an international company outside of Japan as part of my next career development.
What attracted me to join Facebook was the range of innovative products that the Audience Network team provides to publishers – from native advertising, in-stream video advertising, to mobile web-header bidding solutions. I can discuss advertisement monetization with a variety of clients from different platforms such as mobile, television, radio, internet, newspaper and movie. These social connections have benefitted my career greatly.

How did Facebook support you when you were relocating to Singapore?

Singapore is the third country that I had worked in outside of Japan. When I was with my previous company (a domestic Japanese firm), they had offered attractive tax benefits and pension, but I had to complete the administration work by myself, which I struggled. I was worried that it would be the same experience for Facebook, but was pleasantly surprised by how easy and straightforward everything was. From getting the work visa to finding a new apartment, Facebook had everything nicely organized for me when I moved to Singapore!

Can you describe the Facebook Singapore office culture?

My colleagues from US, Europe, Middle East and Asia Pacific are very supportive and highly motivated, and I can always count on them for help. I remembered that when I first started on the mobile web service project, I did not have much knowledge about header bidding. Thankfully, one of my teammates had background experience in web services, and took the effort to share his knowledge with me. I could get up to speed quickly thanks to him.
Working in a global environment has also opened my eyes to the ways and practices of diverse cultures. I’ve come to appreciate and embrace the differences in the way my colleagues work, think and discuss. There has been more “AHA” moments than I care to count!
I think Facebook’s culture of collaboration and openness enables our people to move fast and focus on impact. I am very happy and proud to be working for a company with such an incredible culture!

What are your 3 favorite things about Singapore?

  • Singapore is very easy for a Japanese to live in. There are a lot of Japanese restaurants and grocery stores in town. Traffic network, bus and subway are well organized, and of course Singapore is one of the safest countries in the world.
  • Singapore is a travel and flight hub, so it is very easy and affordable to travel to other countries within Asia Pacific. Personally, I love scuba diving, and it takes less than three hours to travel my favorite diving destinations in Phuket and Bali!
  • Singapore is an English-speaking country. I have lived in non-English-speaking countries before, and had many difficulties understanding official documents, communicating with the locals and understanding street signs. But here in Singapore, I can speak English and easily communicate with anyone! This is amazing to me!
