Odense in Denmark will be the site of our eighth data center and, at 55,000 sq m, it's nearly double the size of the Royal Arena in Copenhagen! The data center houses the infrastructure that connects billions of people. Featuring the latest server, storage and network designs developed through the
Open Compute Project, Odense will be one of the most advanced, energy-efficient data centers in the world.
The facility will feature our latest hyper-efficient hardware, cooled using outdoor air, and powered by clean and renewable wind energy. The facility will also have the infrastructure needed to capture the excess heat generated by our servers and recycle it into the local district heating system operated by Fjernvarme Fyn. Learn more by watching
this video. When complete, the heat recovery infrastructure will enable the recovery of 100,000 MWh of energy per year, which could produce enough heat to warm 6,900 homes, for example. This energy will be recovered from our servers and recycled by a newly-constructed heat pump facility powered by 100% clean and renewable energy. Supporting relocation
Meet Rachael and Niamh, members of our Global Mobility Team
At Facebook, our Global Mobility team oversee delivery of a generous relocation package provided to all our relocating people and their families. We relocate thousands of people every year with rave reviews. While relocating can be a very personal experience, and you will want to stay close to all the key decisions, you can mostly sit back and let us do all the heavy lifting and co-ordinating of all your services. Between your recruiter, the Global Mobility team at Facebook and our partners, you’ll have all the support you need for a successful relocation!
The relocation package will include standard relocation and settling in benefits, which cover a variety of costs. We're committed to getting you, your accompanying dependents and your belongings safely to the new location. While details are confidential, a relocation consultant will work with you to explain the available benefits and help craft your personalised relocation, in line with the budget of additional funds you’re given (based on location and family size). You will have an opportunity to review additional relocation details if offered a position at Facebook.
We will also support employees and their eligible dependents with obtaining the relevant visas to enable them to reside in Odense.
In EMEA, our Global Mobility contacts are Rachael and Niamh who are excited to have an opportunity to get to know you and support your relocation. They will be available to answer any questions you may have and ensure that you’re having the best experience possible.
Meet Carsten, Data Center Operations, Site Manager
“I have always known that I wanted to work with computers and tech, right from childhood when I saved money to buy my first home computer, a Commodore 64. From there I got interested in the world of programming. When I studied I got into a job within IT operations at the Danish Government and from that point in time my main focus has been on data center operations.
My role in Facebook is to ensure that we deliver the required compute power from the Odense Data Center to support the business applications of Facebook. Another part of my role is to support all of the teams on-site to work as ‘one team’. Right now my main focus is on hiring people to our new site in Odense, Denmark. Facebook is a great place to work. The energy in the organisation is incredible. When you wake up every morning and look forward to going to work, why not stay where you are? As one of my colleagues said to me 'I have the best job in Denmark' – I agree, that’s the feeling I have as well.
For me, to operate and deliver compute power to Facebook and our family of apps and services from the Odense data center is a direct contribution and in support of our mission. Our data centers deliver the compute power to keep Facebook applications running and support communities across the world."
Hear from Geir, who relocated to Odense
You're originally from Norway and relocated to Sweden - can you tell us about your journey?
I’m from a small town called Halden in Norway. I first moved to Luleå in 2012 as the first European Facebook data center was being built. Now, in 2017, I made the decision to relocate to Odense where our new data center is located. Things got exciting as the move date came closer, especially after all our household goods were picked up. Luckily enough the kids were also excited about the move! Since then, we’ve settled into our new home, assembled a lot of furniture and unpacked. Thanks for the warm welcome, Odense!
What attracted you to Odense?
As a Norwegian, I’ve been to Denmark on vacation several times. As our friendly neighbors in the south, I’ve always valued a visit to any part of the country. Copenhagen, Fredrikshavn, Skagen, Billund and now Odense. We live a little outside the city center but can still enjoy what the city has to offer. As I travel a bit myself I was also looking for an airport that would take me as direct as possible to my usual destinations. Copenhagen airport is well connected, with direct flights to many major cities. Another benefit is that it’s close to mainland Europe and Norway too, for the times we want to visit friends and family back home.
What are you most excited about your move?
Professionally, the wonders of constructing a new data center site is one of the big things I’m excited about. Being there from scratch and witnessing the work going on. Personally, I’m excited about being in a new country, getting to know the language and the culture better. I’m thrilled with the reception we have received into the community and apparently “street fests” or “community parties” is one of the big Danish traditions, so I can’t wait to see what this brings.
How easy/seamless was your relocation with Facebook?
I would say that it’s seamless. Everything got sorted with my own relocation agent making sure I got in contact with the right people and that I got appointments set up for household move surveys, who to contact in the destination country and what to plan for in advance. There is support throughout the program and within Facebook in general. I’m very happy with the support given.
