When Majella Mungovan joined the Facebook company (now Meta) seven years ago, she learned a valuable lesson in leadership. “My biggest mistake was making a lot of assumptions,” she explains. “I thought I knew which problems we needed to solve and how to solve them. In reality, it took me six months to a year after joining to understand our challenges and how to solve them at an unprecedented scale.”
Reflecting on her early experience, Majella offers advice for fellow leaders. “Listen and you’ll learn,” she promises. “Just because you’ve done something before doesn’t mean you can do it again the same way at another company. You need the full context so you can make the best possible decisions. Equally important, you’ll empower your team along the way.”
Majella had been with another technology company for more than a decade when she saw an open role at Meta. “I was active on Facebook at the time and interested in leadership—and I was especially inspired by what Sheryl Sandberg was doing. When I interviewed, I met so many interesting people and realized how much opportunity there was to solve new problems at scale. I was excited to think about the value I could bring to the team.”
Now the VP of Finance Operations, Majella leads the Global Revenue Operations team of 130 people in Dublin, with support from 400 team members who are dispersed across the globe.

Leading with passion, care and transparency

At Meta, leadership is focused on looking ahead for opportunities. Leaders empower their teams to come up with new strategies and build innovative solutions across organizations.
“Meta is growing quickly, and we all have lots of opportunities to take on new projects and scope,” Majella says. “Leading from within helps ensure personal growth. There’s amazing support for professional development through executive coaching. We all maintain a learning mindset here. As a result, a couple of years at Meta can exponentially increase your capabilities as a leader.”
For Majella, evolving as a leader has come with embracing transparency with her team. “This was especially important during the coronavirus pandemic,” she explains. “I was homeschooling my twin boys, who are 11, while working from home. It was a massive challenge! I posted updates and photos regularly to share how we were getting through and what I was feeling. I was inspired when many people on the team responded with personal messages of gratitude, sharing how they were doing and what they were thinking. Everyone’s situation is different, and when we can be open with one another about our challenges, we can be a stronger support to one another. Ultimately, this empowers all of us to work better together.”

Driving innovation through diverse perspectives

The opportunity to innovate in meaningful ways drives Majella every day. “Innovation is all about how we support new business models for large-scale processes, how we can make cutting-edge investments in technology and how we use diverse perspectives to think differently.”
Team members with non-traditional experience bring a valuable perspective for solving challenges. “We have someone on the team who used to design bridges, and now he designs financial models,” she beams. “I look for people who are effective collaborators, innovative thinkers and strong problem solvers. People with different skills push us to think creatively. If you can pinpoint a person’s unique strengths, it can be gold dust for your team.”
With team members in more than 10 countries, Majella says her learning journey over the last three years has been focused on leading across global cultures. “With the geographic distribution of our team, it's incredibly important we understand the challenges, concerns and experiences of people on our team who are based around the world,” she explains.

Making a global impact from Dublin

With a vision of powering Meta’s mission by becoming the world’s most innovative, effective and secure revenue operations team, Majella and her team in Dublin are helping establish new global standards.
One of the great things about working in the Dublin Office, Majella notes, is the presence of both global and regional teams. As a result, there’s immense opportunity for internal mobility and for people to have longer career paths and explore new areas of work.
Even more, the team in Dublin is responsible for informing much of Meta’s global finance strategy. “The Global Finance team has a lot of leadership roles in Dublin, and we bring a global perspective to Meta’s headquarters,” Majella explains. “I’m proud that there’s a lot of opportunity and impact coming out of Dublin.”
Ultimately, when she reflects on her time at Meta as a leader, Majella says it comes down to having a strong vision, as well as the courage and conviction to bring the team along with you to realize that vision. “If you can bring in talented people and create a culture where they can do great work by giving them freedom and support to be creative, exciting things can happen.”
