One of the most exciting things about working at Facebook is our global presence, with offices located around the world with teams working on exciting and complex challenges every day. Our team of passionate people and industry leaders are immersed in solving some of the biggest issues facing our generation, while leading a fast-paced industry that is evolving daily.
We spoke with three team members who relocated to the Bay Area to join Facebook to learn more about why they decided to make the move and how they're now impacting the lives of billions of people at Facebook. Here are their stories:
Grace P., Data Scientist
“I am a data scientist at Facebook, but five years ago, my life was very different. I was a stay-at-home mom on a farm in Florida, taking care of my six children and more than 100 farm animals.
I had been off of Facebook for 9 years when a recruiter reached out to me. In that time, the product had evolved from lots of Farmville and pokes to a tool to give people the power to build community. I am excited to work on Facebook's mission to bring the world closer together.
I am also so glad our family made the move to California. I've never experienced a company as thoughtful as Facebook. My recruiter sent all six of my children each three gifts at different points during the relocation process. It made them feel a part of all of this. This wasn't just Mom's new job—this was the whole family's mission. They feel invited and welcome here, they visit for meals and they get to meet some of my coworkers. This was never something I have experienced at any of the places my husband or I have worked before. “A year ago, I was living in New York, brainstorming ideas for my startup and looking for ways to effect change on a broad scale. Enter Facebook, with as broad a reach as can be achieved today, and an opportunity to work in Silicon Valley. Relocating to an unfamiliar city certainly took me out of my comfort zone, but I was compelled by the unique opportunity that Facebook presented. The chance to work on some of the biggest challenges facing our generation, and positively affect billions of lives—this was exactly the opportunity I was looking for! A few months later, I gave up my MetroCard and headed West with my family. Now that I'm here, I have a deeper understanding and appreciation for the scope and substance of Facebook's impact, as can only be gained from within the company. From connecting cancer survivors across continents to raising funds to build wells in African villages, there's no shortage of heartening reminders that we're really doing something special.
Having been through the relocation process for a previous role, I wasn't looking forward to the experience, but with Facebook the process was impressively thorough and complete. I remember bonding with my colleagues who had also relocated, sharing anecdotes and tips from our moving experiences. In almost every interaction, a common thread was a sense of mission in being part of such an impactful organization, while maintaining a sense of fun and camaraderie. Facebook is all about community and there is an internal group for everything. Whether it’s for newly relocated hires, Game of Thrones fans or groups like NewDads@Facebook and FIFA@FB, you can find your own community and kindred spirits, while doing some of the most impactful work of your career. “I’m originally from South Africa, and had been living in Los Angeles doing advertising when I got the opportunity to join Facebook full-time. Having worked on brands like Nike and Coca-Cola, the hardest thing to do is make a better ad than before. I thought that Facebook was an incredibly interesting brand to work with at this juncture of the company's lifecycle and my career. Moving to a company that operates at this scale is very different, with an incredible opportunity to touch and speak to billions of people. There’s a lot of work to be done and stories to be told, and I came here to take on that challenge. When I interviewed, I was so struck by how nice everyone was. You hear how efficient Facebook is as a tech company with metrics and goals, and assume people might be cold. That could not be further from the truth. People are incredibly warm, and I was charmed by the team I was joining more than anything else. I was always aware that moving from Los Angeles to San Francisco would be a cultural shift for me, so I’ve made sure I still have creative outlets. You have to get to know a city, and find what’s unique rather than seeking out the same experience you had before. My advice to other people considering a move is to know there are tons of people at Facebook who will give you all the support and advice you need, whether it’s the best restaurants or doggy daycare referrals.
