Tell us about production engineering...

We're a hybrid of Software, Systems, Networking and Design for Scale, where most of our time is spent in writing code. Like any team has software engineers for mobile, software engineers for frontend and software engineers for backend, we are software engineers focused on infrastructure and production.

As a Production Engineer, what makes working at Facebook unique?

The scale, the challenges and the people.
The scale: the products and infrastructure are on a massive scale. With over 2.4 billion people using Facebook monthly, the smallest improvement or regression is massive. From the infrastructure perspective, we have to deal with this scale and build automation for it.
The challenges: in our day to day work we tackle complex, unsolved problems. The Facebook scale results in our ability to perform actions like provisioning thousands of servers in a single command. This means we spend our time thinking about the bigger, tougher problems. It's hard, but it's also very challenging and rewarding.
The people: one of the amazing things about working in Facebook is the amazingly talented people around you. This provides an incredible learning environment. If you have a question in a specific area, such as networking, chef, databases, or performance tuning - you can just message one of your colleagues who is a world expert in this field.

Tell me about a challenge you are working on now.

One of the challenges on one of our three teams that we're working on is large scale automation on FB Lite. With over 200 million monthly users, FB Lite has a massive infrastructure to support it. To support the product's rapid growth we're often adding new hardware to the service. Leveraging the great single machine automation we have built and have in place, we're now working on large scale automation in order to be able to add or remove hundreds of servers from the service in a fully automated way without disruption.
This involves code in the product, health checks and integration with load balancers, provisioning and many more tools and systems in Facebook.

How do you maintain the ‘move fast’ culture as you continue to grow?

Despite being a relatively big company, we work very hard to maintain our startup culture and to constantly move fast. This can be seen on multiple areas: First, we push code frequently on all products, including mobile versions - we want to see our features out the door as quickly as we can. Second, we believe in iterating over changes but moving forward quickly; “done is better than perfect”.

Facebook is a mission driven company, of our various values, which do you connect with the most and why?

Focus on Impact is my favourite Facebook value. In my mind, it shows our emphasis on working on the most important thing with the biggest impact. It sounds simple, but most companies do it poorly. This means we are very data driven, we measure the impact of our work and we don't confuse motion with progress. It keeps us honest and it makes sure we recognize people by their real impact made in the company.

What excites you about the future of Facebook?

We're 1% done. That's our motto here at Facebook. There are so many things to do in order to connect the world and new challenges and technology keep coming in. WhatsApp, Oculus, Internet.org and many more are all huge efforts by Facebook that are just starting their way in my mind.
We still have billions of people in the world to connect, growing our existing products and enabling new people to use the internet through initiatives like Internet.org would allow us to achieve this great challenge.
