Editor’s note: The following post is by Yinan Z., a reseller solutions manager in Hong Kong. In her own words, she shares how her experience at Meta has empowered her to be bold during her career journey.
“Being bold” is one of my favorite values at Meta, but it isn’t something that has always come naturally to me. I’ve recently embraced what it means to speak up, take risks, and see challenges as opportunities to grow.
Now at Meta for almost three years, I’ve learned to live this important value daily. Are you experiencing feelings of uncertainty or imposter syndrome at work or while applying for a new role? If so, here is my story with four tips to help you feel more confident along your career path.

My path to Meta

Before joining Meta, I applied for a role that caught my interest online. I was so happy when I quickly heard back from a recruiter. After we spoke a bit more, we realized the position probably wasn’t the best fit for my background and my skills—it was actually the wrong job altogether!
Two months later, I saw another job that was a much better match for me. But the role called for several more years of experience and I wasn’t sure if I would qualify, so I reached back out to the recruiter and asked if she would be open to a phone call. Not only did she tell me about the position and Business Integrity team in Hong Kong, but gave me guidance to help with the interview process. I felt so empowered by her advice and suggestions that I put together a deck to showcase how I thought about problem solving during my interviews. Looking back, I see this was one of the first instances where the support I received here helped me uncover new ways to be bold. This has continued throughout my career at Meta.
“Don't worry about whether you've worked in tech before. Even if you don't have all the direct professional experience a role asks for, there can be many creative ways to showcase your applicable skills. Work closely with your recruiter to prepare for the interview process.”

Adjusting to life and the Meta culture in Hong Kong

Moving from Shanghai to Hong Kong opened up a world of new possibilities for me. One of the first things I noticed was the friendly culture at the office. People were hanging out together, playing ping pong and socializing over coffee. Even though no one knew me, they came over and said hello. While it took some getting used, to coming from a more corporate environment, I quickly realized stepping away from project work to have fun with co-workers across teams was a great way to meet new people and a smart way to recharge.
I’ve also been empowered by flexibility at Meta, as we each have the ability to create our own schedule and work autonomously on projects. I feel confident setting boundaries and speaking up about what I need in order to do my best work. Leadership is supportive, embraces diversity and encourages fairness. I especially love how women are encouraged to have a voice here. It’s much easier to speak up and suggest big ideas when you know your teammates value what you have to say.
“If you’re interviewing, in addition to asking about the role and the camaraderie across teams, consider asking about benefits such as health insurance, financial planning and wellness that align closely with your life and what you need.”

Transitioning teams within Meta

I spent two years on the Business Integrity team when the opportunity to join the Reseller Sales Org (RSO) team came up. I knew accepting a new position meant I would have to adjust to being a beginner again. But I also saw that joining the Reseller team would be a great growth opportunity for me to learn new skills and make an impact on a different part of the business.
While I was evaluating the opportunity, I felt fortunate to have support from both my current manager and the person who would become my new manager. Knowing that both of them were in my corner and championing my growth gave me the confidence to try something new. People here genuinely support each other and it feels like one big family, which I believe is highly unique to Meta. Now on the Reseller team, I still have the chance to work with the Business Integrity team. I’m very close with my former manager and we catch up regularly. I have all of the support I need to feel empowered on my career path, helping me be bold enough to take advantage of all the opportunities that present themselves along the way.
“If you feel uncertain when making a big decision, get a gut check from people you trust. This could be your teammates, your manager, or a mentor. Talking it out can help you evaluate your options, and getting thoughtful feedback will guide you.”

Turning challenges into opportunities

Even though I’ve been at Meta for a couple of years, I’m still finding new areas where I can be bold about my personal growth and while working with my team. Every day, we have the chance to solve complex problems (some of them for the first time), and I now see challenges as opportunities.
I recently led a product launch during the pandemic and learned a lot about how to collaborate with my team through virtual meetings. Connecting one on one, talking things through and taking the time to find the best ways to communicate resulted in a successful outcome the team was proud of. For me personally, guiding my team through this launch was an empowering experience. Developing the ability to collaborate cross-functionally is a valuable skill I believe will help anyone excel anywhere.
“Being bold requires getting out of your comfort zone! Embrace different kinds of challenges to uncover opportunities where you can grow across your skillset, from project work to communication and leadership.”
