At Facebook, everyone is encouraged to collaborate and share ideas openly; people are empowered to take charge in order to have the biggest impact. We've brought this mentality into the design and building of our world-class data centers — one of which is located in the beautiful town of Luleå, Sweden. Here, we power our mission to bring the world closer together.
Over the next few months, I'm going to start posting some rare photos of the most advanced technology Facebook is building around the world.
We're starting deep in the forests of northern Sweden with the Luleå data center. It's a key part of our global infrastructure, and it uses a variety of local natural resources to increase efficiency and save power.
The small town of Luleå is less than 70 miles south of the Arctic Circle, and it's typically pretty cold. The temperature in the area is below 50 degrees most days, so we use large fans to pull in the outside air to naturally cool the thousands of warm servers that line the center’s broad hallways. A dozen hydro-electric plants operate on nearby rivers, providing a reliable and renewable power source. The whole system is 10% more efficient and uses almost 40% less power than traditional data centers.
Inside, the main building is the size of six football fields. Nearly all the technology in the facility, from the servers to the power distribution systems, is based on Open Compute Project designs as well.
You probably don't think about Luleå when you share with friends on Facebook, but it's an example of the incredibly complex technology infrastructure that keeps the world connected. I'm looking forward to sharing photos of more of our advanced technology soon. - Mark Zuckerberg, September 2016
Luleå is a small coastal town just south of the Arctic Circle, and it's surrounded by dense forests and icy rivers. The facility opened in 2013 and was our first data center outside the U.S. Wherever possible, we used the beautiful wood and art of the area to showcase local craftsmanship.
This is Luleå, one of the most efficient data centers in the world

One of the world's most efficient and sustainable data centers

The Luleå Data Center is one of the most advanced, energy and water-efficient facilities in the world. The facility houses our hyper-efficient hardware and can operate in a higher-temperature environment, which reduces the overall cooling load required in our data center. We also cool the facility with 100% outdoor air — instead of traditional chilled water plants, and we power our operations with 100% clean and renewable local hydroelectric energy. Together, these strategies help ensure we power our operations with the smallest footprint possible.
Because of these efficiencies, we maintain a power usage effectiveness (PUE) of 1.09, which is far more efficient than the industry standard. This means almost every watt going into our data center is used to run the computing equipment; or, less than 9 percent of the energy input is being used for non-computing tasks to support the facility infrastructure.
Earlier this year, the European Commission of Energy Efficiency awarded Facebook the 2017 EU Code of Conduct Award for Energy Efficiency in Data Centers. And like all Facebook data centers, Luleå earned LEED Gold certification for using design strategies that protect land, conserve water, promote energy efficiency, eliminate waste, and provide excellent indoor air quality for workers.
