This is an exciting opportunity to work with a diverse group of researchers, engineers and developers focused on developing smart textiles for the next generation of wearables for XR devices. We are specifically looking for a candidate with broad knowledge in smart textiles and garment construction, integration of electronics into soft and flexible systems, and who can work with a team of researchers working in haptics, sensing, tracking, and materials science. The role will include a mix of hands-on build time, as well as time coordinating with XFN partners to execute on testing and specialty manufacturing to bring into prototype development. In addition to working on cutting edge research the candidate will have access to state of the art textile equipment and facilities, and support collaborative research efforts internal and external to the team and company.
Softgoods Research Developer Responsibilities
  • Frame, scope, plan, and execute multidisciplinary development for wearable interaction devices for AR/VR aligned with broader research strategy.
  • Work with researchers, designers, and engineers to drive softgoods solutions for wearable AR/VR interaction devices, specifically focused on supporting the design of functionalized gloves.
  • Thrive in a dynamic, ambiguous, and cross-disciplinary environment.
  • Anticipate and articulate the requirements for soft good prototypes (patternmaking, textile design, component integration) and work with the team through optimizing the trade-space to deliver these functional prototypes.
  • Design and develop softgoods prototypes that incorporate novel technologies.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree or equivalent industry experience in a field related to wearable devices and textiles, such as Industrial Design, Fashion Design, Textile Science, Polymer and Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering.
  • 2+ years research or industry experience in smart textiles or wearables, with demonstrated experience producing high quality prototypes.
  • 2+ years experience in pattern making for garments using digital tools, such as Optitex or similar.
  • 2+ years experience 3D or weft knitting and demonstrated experience working and communicating with other programmers to design garments and knit textiles.
  • Track record of contributing to high impact projects and teams and delivering research or product prototypes in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master Degree or equivalent experience in fields listed above.
  • 2+ years experience working with manufacturing scale textile equipment, such as industrial knitting machines.
  • 2+ years experience with lamination, bonding, and/or leatherworking for wearable products.
  • 2+ years working with vendors to source specialty materials for functional textile applications.

$111,000/year to $164,000/year + bonus + equity + benefits

Individual pay is determined by skills, qualifications, experience, and location. Compensation details listed in this posting reflect the base salary only, and do not include bonus, equity or sales incentives, if applicable. In addition to base salary, Meta offers benefits.
