As a Laser Integration Scientist working at Reality Labs Research, you will be responsible for developing strategies to integrate visible light lasers, SLEDs and other sources with a variety of nano-optics components for future AR/VR devices. As part of this role, you will help system architects make considerations on laser specifications and integration strategies. You will be responsible for setting up internal and external research efforts to enable advanced source integration protocols and deliver early demonstrators.
Laser Integration Scientist (PhD) Responsibilities
  • Partner with LD scientists to design and develop electrically pumped, integrated lasers for visible wavelengths (DFB, DBR, PIC-based).
  • Devise integration strategies, process flow, and photonic design for the integration of III-V materials onto different material platforms (SiN, SiO, LiNbO3, etc.).
  • Partner with System Architects, Optical Scientists, and external vendors to develop laser integration solutions that meet specifications of different projects and systems.
  • Perform FDTD simulations of the optical components of integrated lasers and photonic integrated circuits. Carry out tolerancing analysis and optimization of the various components for robust engineering.
  • Perform thermal simulations and failure analysis of fabricated lasers.
  • Perform hands-on nanofabrication and optical testing of fabricated lasers.
  • Contribute to the tool selection process aimed at building an integration lab at Meta.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, a PhD degree in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Optical Sciences, Optical Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience. Degree must be completed prior to joining Meta.
  • Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.
  • Experience with Photonic Integrated Circuit design, simulation, and fabrication.
  • Knowledge of Lumerical FDTD/Mode/Interconnect, COMSOL.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of design and fabrication of semiconductor lasers (DFB and tunable DBR). Experience with design and fab of visible lasers.
  • Hands-on experience on nanofabrication (MOCVD, XRD, EBL, ICP, PECVD, LCPVD, Evap, etc.).
  • Experience working and communicating cross-functionally in a team environment.
  • Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, as well as first-authored publications at leading workshops or conferences.
About Meta
Meta builds technologies that help people connect, find communities, and grow businesses. When Facebook launched in 2004, it changed the way people connect. Apps like Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp further empowered billions around the world. Now, Meta is moving beyond 2D screens toward immersive experiences like augmented and virtual reality to help build the next evolution in social technology. People who choose to build their careers by building with us at Meta help shape a future that will take us beyond what digital connection makes possible today—beyond the constraints of screens, the limits of distance, and even the rules of physics.
