Meta seeks a highly motivated team player with a passion for intellectual property and intermediary liability issues to serve as Counsel, IP, with a particular focus on copyright. This role will tackle cutting-edge legal issues related to content posted on Facebook, Instagram and the company’s other services. The ideal candidate will have a background in user-generated content (UGC) and copyright legal regimes relating to online intermediaries, including the DMCA under US law and the EU Copyright Directive under EU law. Days are fast-paced and action-packed, and we are looking for someone that is eager to roll up their sleeves and problem-solve on content-related matters of all kinds.
Counsel, IP (Copyright) Responsibilities
  • Advise on IP, content and music issues relating to UGC posted by users on the company’s services
  • Advise on policies and systems built to support copyright protection, and collaborate with colleagues on other company products raising IP issues
  • Develop and apply policies and practices arising under local and international laws, such as the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), E-Commerce Directive, and EU Copyright Directive
  • Work closely with global teams across departments and offices, including operations, product and engineering, commercial counsel, sales and partnerships, communications, and public policy
  • Coordinate legal advice with an international network of outside counsel
Minimum Qualifications
  • 3+ years of attorney experience focused on intellectual property, from in-house or at a law firm
  • Experience with IP intermediary liability issues and laws (DMCA, E-Commerce Directive, EU Copyright Directive, etc.)
  • Background in copyright law concepts, such as Fair Use
  • JD degree and membership in at least one state bar
Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong issue-spotting skills and experience assessing legal, practical and business risks
  • Experience working with internet or technology companies
  • Experience working in a collaborative, fast-paced environment and making judgments under deadlines
  • Experience analyzing and advising on music issues and laws including the DMCA, EU Copyright Directive, E-Commerce Directive, etc.
