THE SPACE Privacy Infrastructure is a team within Meta’s Infrastructure organisation. Its core goal is ensuring Meta exceeds users’ Privacy expectations and is a good steward of the information users entrust us with. We create large-scale infrastructure that govern how Meta collects, uses, shares, stores and deletes user information. We are evolving how databases, logging, querying and data processing systems, compute engines are designed to answer privacy questions and enforce privacy promises at the scale of exabytes and billions of users: from ensuring we use user data only for what users consented, to disposing of data exhaustively and timely upon user request, to offering users’ strong anonymity guarantees about their data. In Data Lifecycle Management specifically we build systems to satisfy 3 key user expectations: Access, Retention and Deletion. We define Access and the user expectation to obtain a copy of the data that Meta holds about them. We define Retention as the user expectation for Meta to retain data only for the minimal amount of time to satisfy product use cases and not for longer. And finally we define as Deletion the user expectation to be able to press a button and delete all their data from Meta’s systems. These 3 problems - while distinct - share similar technical challenges. Chief amongst them the ability to reason about and enforce requirements across all user data and data systems Meta retains. Data Lifecycle Management is a team of approximately 70 software engineers primarily based in London. We coordinate with peers and partners in the US East Coast but also across the company. We partner internally and externally with product experts, policymakers, regulators, academics and global organisations to advance the public Privacy discourse, norms and state of the art practices.
