Meta is seeking a Performance & Capacity Engineer (Optimization) to join the Capacity Engineering & Analysis team to focus on site-wide performance and capacity optimization at the intersection of all Meta products and services, and all physical infrastructure (Servers, Data Centers, Network). This role will focus on creating and optimizing global and regional capacity plans at various altitudes to balance service, infrastructure, and business constraints by using Operations Research skills to build and improve mathematical optimization models and solvers. This role is uniquely positioned to optimize these capacity plans at the most strategic levels with company level impact. This is one of the most cross functional roles at the company, with the opportunity to work with a variety of engineering and business teams to power the rapid growth of Meta’s products. This engineer will help to ensure optimal operation of our infrastructure resources from both a cost and technology perspective, facilitating tens of billions of user requests, tens of exabytes of data, terabits/s of network flow. Performance & Capacity Engineer - Capacity Planning Optimization (PhD) Responsibilities
  • Own infrastructure capacity planning for all of Meta: all software products/services and plans for how to scale server and data center resources most efficiently.
  • Build automated, scalable, and rigorous solutions to large-scale web, mobile and data infrastructure problems by developing state-of-the-art mathematical optimization and other automation
  • Partner across the engineering technical landscape to optimize at the intersection of hardware, infrastructure, and software. Work closely with software service owners, Production Engineering, Server Hardware Engineering, Server Supply Chain, Network Engineering, Data Center Design, Operations, and Planning teams to find the most optimal ways to scale our infrastructure and place our services.
  • Partner with Finance to balance cost efficiency with technical and product considerations.
  • Work cross-functionally to define problem statements, collect data, build analytical models and make recommendations to drive change and optimization at the most strategic levels.
  • A lot of other cool work: Identify capacity-related issues proactively and work across technical and business teams to define and implement solutions.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining a PhD degree in Operations Research, Computer Science, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience. Degree must be completed prior to joining Meta.
  • Proficient in Python, C++, or other coding languages
  • Experience managing ambiguity, intellectual curiosity and desire to learn about infrastructure capacity planning and optimization

  • Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience. Degree must be completed prior to joining Meta.
  • Proven knowledge and experience with building mathematical optimization models and solvers
  • Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience and demonstrated success in working with technical infrastructure (servers, data centers, networks)
  • Experience working with distributed systems at scale
  • Experience with planning and analytics
  • Experience in cost optimization, cost management, or other business/strategy related activities
  • Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, as well as first-authored publications at leading workshops or conferences
  • Experience working and communicating cross functionally in a team environment

$115,900/year to $168,000/year + bonus + equity + benefits

Individual pay is determined by skills, qualifications, experience, and location. Compensation details listed in this posting reflect the base salary only, and do not include bonus, equity or sales incentives, if applicable. In addition to base salary, Meta offers benefits.
