Lead Counsel, Open Source & Licensing
Meta is seeking a highly motivated, team player. You will join an invigorating, inspiring team of attorneys who are passionate about the intersection of IP and future technologies. You will work with team members and stakeholders to help manage significant and complex IP-related matters and advise internal teams on IP risk. The position will cover a wide range of areas in IP, including strategy and counseling, open source, patent licensing, technology transactions, standards organizations, and M&A. You must have the ability to work proactively with various teams across the organization including Legal, Product, and Engineering. This is a great opportunity to join a growing legal team and to work on novel issues in an exciting, fast-paced environment. This is a full-time position and will report directly to the Head of Licensing and Open Source.
Lead Counsel, Open Source & Licensing Responsibilities
  • Counsel on open source licensing, compliance, and diligence
  • Manage open source strategy and policies for licensing, use, contribution, and release
  • Perform legal diligence to support participation in open source projects, including releasing code under an open source license and new open source projects
  • Advise on open source issues in commercial and technology transactions
  • Provide advice and negotiate IP terms in technology transactions and licensing
  • Participate in standards setting organizations
  • Collaborate and interface with engineers and project managers on technical issues and questions
Minimum Qualifications
  • JD degree (or foreign equivalent) with membership in at least one US state bar
  • 5+ years of legal experience
  • Open source licensing experience
  • Experience in one or more of the following: IP licensing, technology transactions, M&A commercial/IP due diligence, and, handling of third party IP-related demands
  • Familiarity with computer science, electrical engineering or information retrieval, either through undergraduate or industry experience
Preferred Qualifications
  • Interest in and aptitude for understanding complex software and hardware engineering products, practices and systems
  • In-house experience
  • Standards organization experience
  • Computer science, engineering or another technical field (or equivalent experience)
  • Experience with patent litigation and licensing
