Facebook is seeking a Field Engineer to join our Global Data Center Connectivity team (GDCC). Our data centers are the foundation upon which our innovative services are delivered and our rapidly scaling infrastructure operates. The GDCC team lights up Facebook’s global data centers, using industry leading fiber optic cabling, outside plant (OSP) and inside plant (ISP) to deliver the physical infrastructure that connects the world to our services, videos, feeds, and other information stored on Facebook’s global network. The Field Engineer is part of the GDCC Data Center team and is responsible for delivering and maintaining new builds, retrofits and day-to-day operations for all low voltage, fiber optic cabling, network and any supporting infrastructure. The Field Engineer is the main GDCC point of contact for our partners regarding technical scope, and works closely with multiple stakeholders at the data center. This position is on site full-time. Some travel required.
Field Engineer, Global Data Center Connectivity Responsibilities
  • Mission Critical Service Delivery - Ensure a safe delivery and maintenance of all structured cabling and connectivity, according to design and specifications, on time, within budget, and to industry leading standards of quality and reliability ensuring efficient delivery of critical services to the data center
  • Vendor Field Management - Responsible for all GDCC activities within construction, projects and day-to-day operations on site including tracking and reporting actual progress related to schedule expectations. Set and communicate clear expectations together with the immediate site seam, build key relationships with our installation partners and drive a culture of best practice, safe working environment and execute to a vision of ‘right first time'
  • Quality Assurance - Perform physical inspections to ensure vendor work meets GDCC quality standards throughout the lifecycle of the data center. Validate physical installs, test reports, build accuracy, material and local code compliance including constructability reviews on multiple design phases
  • Technical Field Lead - Technical lead for industry and Facebook standards, responsible to lead product evaluation, design, and installation methods in the field including scope clarification, design and installation details as the owner of the Request For Information process
  • Technical Coordination - Develop solutions to in-field scope-gap or clash issues. Partner with GDCC design and engineering teams to digitally support design reviews, BOM reviews, and as-built drawing validations
  • Documentation - Technical documentation of new product implementations, pilots and evaluations including capturing and sharing lessons learned. Managing project close out deliverables, design, submittals and certifications
  • Operations - Oversight of the Operations team for detailed turn-up schedule, Move, Add, Change, Decommission (MACD) and setting project priorities and ensuring rapid responses to high priority builds and break-fixes. Support cross functional prioritization of workflows. Managing the internal work order system, ticket creation, monitoring, and follow up including server rack deployments with a focus on Service Level Agreements and reliability
  • Process Development - Support development of best practices and initiatives, coordinating standard operating/installation procedures with vendors and site team. Participating in global and regional standards development as needed, assist in developing or identifying network cable/rack/cabinet installation processes and standards
  • Communications & Cross functional team engagement - Liaise with construction partners to ensure deliverables are met during new builds and retrofits. Coordinate with logistics partners, vendors and suppliers to ensure a smooth end to end flow of materials as needed. Work closely with the relevant teams to proactively communicate progress and project risks and initiatives to key stakeholders
  • Safety - Ensure that vendors adhere to safety obligations in accordance with local regulations and Facebook Environmental Health and Safety {EHS} best practice. Lead a 'safety first' culture, with open and transparent communication. Acknowledging good EHS practices
Minimum Qualifications
  • 5+ years experience in structured & fiber optic cabling projects
  • Experience in leading deployments of Network/Structure cabling infrastructure
  • Experience with fiber optic testing at scale inclusive of complex troubleshooting
  • Experience with outside plant cabling (OSP) deployments including OTDR/OLTS testing
  • Experience with Quality Assurance and Quality Control, including progressive inspections and acceptance
  • Experience in EH&S with understanding of relevant safety protocols
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite of tools
  • Experience reviewing and leading installations to design documents and specifications
  • Knowledge of installation standards and local code
  • Experience in a lead role within a construction environment or large scale project including leading people and teams
  • Communications skills
  • Experience in collaborating across multi-disciplines to deliver towards a common goal
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a mission critical environment requiring coordination across multi-disciplines for delivering a common goal
  • Technical Subject Matter Expert (Optical Fiber/DAS/OSP/Structured Cabling/Carrier)
  • Systems experience - BiM360, Unifier, E-Builder, Procore, Primavera P6, DCIM
  • Experience in operations in network Switching, routing and design
