WhatsApp is seeking a highly motivated, talented, and experienced attorney to join its privacy team and advise the company on a range of privacy, data protection, regulatory, and privacy compliance-related issues and initiatives. This role will focus on providing WhatsApp, the world's fastest growing communication service, with strategic and tactical legal counseling on privacy issues. This role will involve collaborating closely with product legal, product leadership, engineering, policy, communications, operations, and business teams. The ideal candidate will have experience advising on state and federal consumer protection and privacy laws, GDPR and other global privacy laws (existing and new), particularly in the context of technology products - even better in the messaging space. We are seeking a candidate who has experience advising on cutting-edge products, rolling out privacy policy updates, responding to regulatory inquiries, standing up compliance programs, and who has strong judgment, communication skills, and a keen interest in learning about new technologies.
Lead Counsel, Privacy (WhatsApp) Responsibilities
Apply subject matter expertise and keen strategic judgment in areas of privacy, data protection and security laws (including state and federal consumer protection and privacy laws, GDPR and other global privacy laws) and provide the broader business with legal advice on the same
Monitor and respond quickly to developments in data privacy and information security (i.e., new laws, regulations, important judgments, regulatory guidance, etc.)
Drive strategy on updates to privacy policy and other public-facing privacy-focused materials, including substance, timing, user notification, and regulatory briefing
Collaborate with other legal and non-legal stakeholders to help guide privacy-forward product development and evaluate the impact of privacy laws, regulatory guidance, and enforcement actions on business initiatives
Drive high-profile and high-impact projects involving privacy analysis and compliance with cross-functional stakeholders across Facebook's business, policy, legal, communications, security, and other departments
Develop regulatory strategy with global privacy regulators in connection with new product features and initiatives and maintain Facebook’s ongoing privacy-by-design processes
Respond to privacy-oriented inquiries from global regulators
Minimum Qualifications
J.D. degree (or foreign equivalent) and membership in at least one US state bar
5+ years of legal experience, including at a law firm and/or in-house or government experience (applicable litigation, regulatory, or product counseling will be considered)
Experience advising on privacy legal risks, regulations, and industry guidelines, with working knowledge of relevant privacy laws including GDPR, CCPA and/or LGPD
Preferred Qualifications
In-house or government experience as applicable, in privacy, litigation, regulatory, or product counseling, particularly at a technology, social media or communications/messaging company
Project management experience on complex legal projects and effective communication and presentation skills
Experience leading and advancing projects in a multi-stakeholder environment
Experience responding to regulatory inquiries
Business judgment and client counseling experience
