Data Protection Counsel

Meta seeks a highly motivated and experienced team player to act as Data Protection Counsel on Meta’s Data Protection team. This is an outstanding opportunity for any candidate who wants to work on some of today’s toughest legal challenges in this developing area of law. The successful candidate will have deep experience in this field of law and be able to apply complex and evolving legal frameworks to new and innovative products and services. The role will focus on providing data protection legal advice and solutions to identify and mitigate legal risk in all phases of business operations. The successful candidates will have the opportunity to support the Meta commercial teams on data protection aspects of a wide range of commercial agreements from well-established sectors to stimulating new industries from emerging technologies. Advising on the data protection aspects of Meta’s infrastructure, incident response as well as standalone projects will provide further development opportunities. The role requires good judgment, a strong work ethic and a keen interest in learning about new technologies and areas of the law. Data Protection Counsel Responsibilities
  • Analyse data-related projects and initiatives to provide practical legal advice across multiple jurisdictions
  • Advise on complex legal issues, including incident response and international data transfers, and apply solutions at scale
  • Provide support to business and compliance teams on data protection laws and accountability and governance requirements
  • Contribute to and support data protection training and compliance programs
  • Monitor and respond to developments in privacy and information security (i.e. new laws, regulations, important judgements, regulatory guidance, etc.)
Minimum Qualifications
  • Solicitor or barrister (qualified to practice law in at least one European jurisdiction)
  • Minimum of 4 years of relevant legal experience, including at a law firm or prior in-house experience (applicable litigation, commercial law or regulatory experience will be considered)
  • In-depth knowledge of legal issues in the area of the operation of online social media platforms including an excellent understanding of data protection law
  • Strong multi-tasking, attention to detail and organisational skills
  • Ability to assess legal, practical and business risks quickly and accurately, as well as thrive in a fast-paced environment and make sound judgments under tight deadlines
  • Excellent problem-solving, written and oral communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to find practical and creative solutions and provide concise and business-focused legal advice
  • Keen interest in data protection and technology
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience advising clients on risk assessment and mitigation across technology product platforms
  • Prior experience working with internet or technology companies a plus
  • Experience working within a global legal team
  • Knowledge of, or fluency in, other European languages is a plus
