For this role, we are looking for an exceptional TPM Director to join our team. RL Research TPM org needs a leader who is a great communicator and collaborator to drive awareness and buy-in across all levels of the RL organization. The right candidate will possess a strong program management background, will have demonstrated experience leading large projects across multiple multidisciplinary teams, as well as building and growing an organization of TPMs. You will have experience with complex cutting edge technology and a well-rounded technical background, with experience with either developing research or products. You thrive in helping your team coordinate and collaborate in the face of ambitious and ambiguous challenges, taking on work that has never been done before. You are able to develop and drive high-level strategic initiatives, building the right processes and methodologies for the team.
Director, TPM Research, Reality Labs Responsibilities
  • Responsible for people management of an organization - hiring, developing and implementing organizational structure, delivering performance reviews, providing continual feedback, coaching and career growth for direct reports.
  • Scale the organization to support fast-paced Research at disparate levels of readiness.
  • Partner with Research leads and product managers to define and revise the long-term strategy for the research organization. Translating that into goals, and roadmaps in partnership with key team leads.
  • Work with the team to develop end-to-end program plans, influence teams to deliver against them, and keep the org and leadership informed on progress.
  • Drive technical excellence within the team, coordinating and contributing to project management practices, team road maps, workflow development.
  • Establish best practices and refine processes for increased flexibility, communication and adaptability among research and development teams.
  • Engage with partner and cross-functional teams to identify constraints, dependencies, and coordination areas, to deliver features at high quality.
  • Identify resources needed and work closely with the team leads to maintain full visibility of multiple projects, ensuring resource gaps are addressed efficiently.
  • Ensure the members of your team are able work at their highest potential and are able to play to their strengths. Ensure that conflicts (both technical and interpersonal) have paths toward resolution to allow the team to move forward.
  • Evaluate retrospectives to add, adjust, and remove processes based on learnings. Look for the right amount of process to accomplish the goal.
  • Serve as an evangelist for the team and its overall culture, both internally and externally.
Minimum Qualifications
  • 10+ years of experience with building and managing a team of Technical Program Managers with demonstrated experience managing both over and underperforming team members.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer science, experience in AI (specifically in the areas of Computer Vision, Speech, and/or NLP).
  • Experience in growing organizations and developing a team culture.
  • Track record of driving through ambiguity and adapting to feedback in the context of at least 2 programs or products managed from inception to delivery.
  • Experience working with a cross-disciplinary team of researchers, software/hardware engineers and product managers.
  • Project management, leadership, dependency management and cross-group collaboration experience (both inside and outside of an organization).
  • Communication/presentation experience through all levels of the organization, technical and non-technical.
