Meta is seeking a senior individual with deep experience in privacy and data protection to join the Office of the Data Protection Officer. This individual should be able to advise the company on a range of privacy, data protection and security-related legal and compliance initiatives. This is a full-time position located in our European headquarters in Dublin, Ireland (preferred). Alternative European locations may be considered including London, UK, Amsterdam, Netherlands, Paris, France or Brussels, Belgium. The role is broad and, among other things, involves advising the business on various legal risks and obligations under various European privacy and data protection laws and regulations, including the General Data Protection Regulation. It involves representing the DPO Office to data subjects and data protection authorities, in addition to reporting to the executive of the Meta family of companies. This role requires the ability to both work independently and collaboratively to assess the impact of project initiatives on data subject's privacy and data protection rights, as well as the impact of laws and regulations on Facebook products and services. We are looking for a senior team player , with sharp analytical and communication skills, who is diligent, proactive, collaborative, curious, organized and has demonstrated excellent legal and business judgment and strategic thinking.
Data Protection Manager, Advisory, ODPO Responsibilities
  • Evaluate the impact of legislative, regulatory, legal developments and industry proposals related to privacy and security, across Meta’s services and companies, as well as the impact of Meta services and products on data subjects' rights relating to privacy and data protection.
  • Advise on Meta’s compliance with privacy and information technology code policies, standards and processes.
  • Develop and provide advice concerning compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”).
  • The role has a core focus on partnering with cross functional teams to ensure effective and consistent approaches to collection, storage, use, retention and deletion of personal data, using privacy subject matter expertise to support and embed data ethics and privacy risk management throughout all functional business programs.
  • Support the DPO Office, including preparing executive reports, ensuring that all DPO advice is appropriately documented, tracked and circulated and helping to manage the central DPO email inbox.
  • You will support ODPO and XFN colleagues in advising functions on how to embed Privacy by Design and other GDPR principles into functional activities.
  • You will help functional teams develop and implement their procedures to achieve compliance with Meta’s core policies on privacy and information security, undertaking research focused on privacy and data protection.
  • You will undertake research on key areas including Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and how these tools will apply in upstream products and services including the Metaverse.
  • You will work collaboratively, as business partner to key stakeholders, to drive a culture of compliance and ethics throughout Meta so that privacy principles are considered at the outset and then re-assessed for subsequent changes in processing of personal data.
  • You will work with key stakeholders to advise on risk management frameworks to help build management’s response to significant business risks, including advising on a privacy risk register and production of clear and concise summary quarterly reporting on progress, delivering verbal updates as necessary to key stakeholders.
  • You will support in delivering consistency on handling personal data, taking as a guide the Meta processes and tools used, developing and maintaining relationships with leadership to identify opportunities to leverage existing knowledge and resources and working with cross functional teams to implement an auditable risk assessment process for the performance and effectiveness of Data Protection Impact Assessments, and undertake other privacy and data protection-related investigations where necessary.
  • Draft guidance, training and awareness materials.
  • Support analysis, investigation and responses to DPO data subject requests.
Minimum Qualifications
  • 10+ years experience as a privacy lawyer from either top tier practice or combination of top tier practice/inhouse lawyer at a technology company.
  • 10+ years of significant experience in the field of data protection and privacy and proven experience of successfully influencing senior business leaders in helping to create and implement strategies to continuously improve a businesses’ overall data protection and privacy posture and proven experience of successfully influencing others across different geographies.
  • Demonstrated strong analytical skills, including the ability to assess risk and impact from a privacy and data protection perspective.
  • Demonstrated capabilities of drafting privacy advices, with a clear focus on the rights of data subjects.
  • Experience managing complex projects, including prioritizing and working alongside cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to independently, quickly and accurately assess legal, practical and business risks in a fast-paced environment and make sound judgments.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and an absolute commitment to professionalism and collegiality.
  • Experience working collaboratively with cross-functional teams to get the job done.
  • Sharp focus on multi-tasking and organisational skills.
  • Attention to detail and strong drafting ability that can be used in a commercial setting with business stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Able to inspire others to develop, communicate and execute diverse and multiple privacy requirements under privacy legislation, translating complex technical issues into business language, with the confidence to communicate with a range of stakeholders at all levels of the business.
  • Experience with the General Data Protection Regulation, as well as other global privacy laws, regulations, and industry guidelines, especially including those relevant for social media and Internet companies.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and advocacy skills, with demonstrable experience of prioritising effectively and managing diverse and multiple requirements.
  • Commercially aware specialist, capable of applying regulatory principles and frameworks to complex commercial and operational arrangements.
  • Experience and an understanding of wider regulatory pressures would be beneficial, with IAPP certification as a data protection professional (CIPP/E, CIPP/M, CIPP/T) preferable.
