The Oculus teams at Facebook build the VR (virtual reality) hardware and platform to let you experience anything, anywhere, with anyone. These teams are dedicated to building experiences that help people defy distance to connect with each other in VR, wherever they are in the world. Virtual reality’s potential to connect the world is immense — and we’re just getting started!
We’re kicking off a series of Q&As with four engineers from the Oculus team in Shanghai. Take five minutes to read about what our people are doing at Oculus’ newest office!
First up, Supply Base Engineering Manager, JJ Kam.
JJ Kam leads the Supply Base Engineering team in Oculus Shanghai. His team plays a critical role in bringing VR to customers, and leading innovation in exciting new products. They develop and maintain manufacturing processes within Oculus’ electro-mechanical supply base.
1) Tell us a little about your background?
I grew up in Ipoh, a small city in Malaysia. I studied at a local college and later graduated with a degree from New Zealand and UK. I spent my last 21 years living in different countries - seven years in New Zealand and UK; 11 years in China and three years in Taiwan! Living in so many locations have enriched my experience in meeting and working with people from diverse cultures, races and nationalities. Currently, I live in Taiwan with my wife and children.
2) A lot of people don’t know about Oculus in Shanghai. Can you share more about your team and the innovative projects that you are working on?
I manage the Supply Base Engineering team, which is based in China. Our team is responsible for all processes that fall under plastic and metal enclosures, soft goods and fabric, module, secondary processes and packaging. Our biggest objective is to build VR and AR products in Oculus that can help build community and bring people closer together. We had just announced our latest
Oculus Go standalone VR headset at this year's
Facebook F8 Conference which our team had put in tremendous effort in making the product a successful ramp.
3) What is your favorite thing about working at Oculus?
The people! My colleagues come from around the world and are experts in different areas. They are humble and passionate about their jobs. Everyone is so focused in what they do - we want to make things right and produce innovative VR and AR products for our customers. At Oculus, you have the opportunity to 'dogfood' products that are yet on market... you can try, hand feel and provide feedback to improve and make products more user-friendly to customers.
4) What excites you most about AR and VR?
I believe AR and VR are at the tip of the iceberg of what will come in the next decade or so. Imagine the possibilities - you're able to go shopping virtually with friends; you're able to explore other planets in different galaxies without going to space; you're able to talk to your parents face to face even though they live thousands of miles away. This is the spirit of building community and bringing the world closer together - whether it is for social communication, education, health, gaming, or any other industry.
5) What are your tips for having a successful career at Oculus?
