How has your internship experience made an impact on you so far?

My internship at Facebook has been truly unique. From the first day, I felt like I was part of the employee team. I was supported professionally and given the opportunity to fully own projects.

Right away, I saw the company's values in action. Facebook's values of Move Fast, Be Bold, Focus on Impact, Be Open, and Build Social Value are written all over the office walls here. For any company, it's very easy to stick these values up as posters, but not as easy to put them into practice. Yet at Facebook Brazil, I could happily spend a whole day watching people work together and practicing the values.

I have come to appreciate the Facebook values mainly because they align with my personal values. For instance, by being open and bold, I keep myself challenged, surprised, and constantly growing. As I look ahead to the rest of my internship, I see that while we have achieved a lot, there's a lot more to do. We're only 1% done in our journey to connect the world and this prospect energizes me. —Paloma G., Small and Medium Business, Client Services Intern

Which Facebook motto do you like most and why?

'Nothing at Facebook is somebody else's problem' is a powerful, short sentence that gets right to the point - no matter what position you're in, no matter how much work you have to do, if you see something unfixed, try to fix it.

Work hard to understand and have empathy for others, help in every possible way you can - that's the foundation of the connectivity we aim for when we are working with each other to connect the world. It's the diametrical opposite of indifference. It's effective because it bonds diverse people and their diverse skills to solve a given problem, and it's deeply humane. This way of working together at Facebook is a powerful driver for me.

As an Analytics Team Intern, it's been amazing and challenging. The role involves working with complex statistical techniques, tricky data sources, infinite amounts of information and so on. Whenever it seemed like my predictive model was going the wrong way, a peer of mine would pop out of nowhere and say with a smile, “Hey, fellow, you seem to need a helping hand.”

These colleagues could have been fixing their own problems, but instead they stopped to voluntarily help me, a younger, inexperienced peer. That's what they've done since I've started here. In turn, I too have paused all my tasks for a moment to simply help others out. Wouldn't life be so much better if we all practiced this motto of 'nothing is somebody else's problem?' —Vitor B., Small and Medium Business, Analytics Intern

What's one of the most valuable lessons you've learned this year?

As an intern, I've learned so much both professionally and personally. It is very difficult to choose just one learning lesson, so here are two.

Firstly, when I joined Facebook earlier this year, I did not understand in practice what everyone meant by the value "Be Bold”. Pretty soon I found myself in very challenging situations in which I didn't know the exact answer or how to act. Those situations put me outside of my comfort zone and that is where I really started to grow. I began to feel more comfortable with taking risks and was not afraid to make mistakes. This frame of mind helped me find the right answers to the problems I worked on and came in handy when my manager asked me to be in charge of the support and development of the products team in Colombia.

Secondly, another great lesson I've learned is adapting and being open to change. This is especially relevant to the Product Team since we need to be aware of all updates and new features daily and apply the changes to our clients' needs. Given the fact that we are in a state of constant adaptation, we have to “move fast” and ensure that the changes are incorporated into our plans without disrupting our deliveries.

Lessons one and two are essential for those who want to stand out and grow in the company. —Marcelo C., Product Intern

What advice do you have for future interns?

If I have to give advice to the new class of interns, it would be to learn. From different verticals and industries to platforms and new skills, just learn and take it all in. Facebook offers huge opportunities in a way that makes everything possible and accessible, but you need to be proactive and dedicated. My experience here has been unique and the culture makes it possible. There is freedom and autonomy to shape your experience. You will not be told what to do, instead you will be supported so you can make the most impact. Finally, enjoy your time here! Go to all the meetings, get to know your industries and clients deeply, learn and collaborate with the smart people that work here and don't forget to have fun! —Marina M., Global Sales Intern
