Joshua A. is the quintessential renaissance man. He has a background in event planning, owns a catering company specializing in Jamaican food, loves finance, and even dabbles in real estate. When evaluating where to start his engineering career, he prioritized interesting challenges, extensive experience, and learning opportunities. But he also wanted an environment that enabled him to pursue his many passions. Here's how Joshua found his home at Facebook D.C.

Solving for X

While growing up in Jamaica, I developed a love of hosting, which led to me starting a career in planning and executing festivals and events. I loved it, but my interest in engineering eventually took me to Carnegie Mellon University, where I studied computer science. During the summer of my junior year, as I was considering my post-graduation options, I landed an internship at Facebook.
Many engineering students graduate and immediately start looking for an opportunity to work for a tech start-up. I assumed I would do the same, but my 12-week internship with Facebook changed everything. I had the opportunity to work in several locations — each with its own distinct personality — but my favorite was Facebook D.C. I was particularly struck by the work done in the D.C. office to coordinate with law enforcement officials responding to real-time emergencies, like preventing suicide and recovering missing children. The work was challenging (and continues to be) incredibly meaningful.
In addition to giving me a chance to have a real-world impact, the Facebook internship gave me complete ownership of a full-stack project. While most internships are more defined and limited in scope, I owned every decision associated with the project and acquired both back-end and front-end UI experience. In just 12 weeks time, I had acquired an incredible amount of experience while doing important work. I was sold.

Startup speed + enterprise resources + global impact…

When Facebook offered me a full-time job as a software engineer at my preferred location, I accepted without hesitation. I never looked back; it turns out, the internship proved to be an authentic glimpse into working at Facebook.
Most engineers work at startups for the “all hands on deck” experience. The small teams afford the opportunity to be thrown into the deep end and work on a little of everything. The conventional wisdom is that a few years at a startup will give you the experience most engineers don’t acquire until they reach a senior level. At Facebook, I work in the environment of a startup, but I have tremendous resources at my fingertips. This is my first engineering job, and I have autonomy and ownership over a broad range of projects. I’m designing to address complex issues, while surrounded by an extensive team of brilliant people with diverse backgrounds. I’m learning more than I ever expected, with the full support of a mature global organization.
Today, I'm working on our efforts around election integrity: combatting foreign interference, removing fake accounts, increasing ads transparency, and reducing the spread of false news. This work — which spans elections worldwide — enables me to have a global impact and make the world a better place from my desk in D.C. Being on the front lines in this way is as exciting as it is fulfilling.
Because we are working on timely issues, we have an on-call rotation to ensure that someone from the engineering team is always available to address problems in real-time. Being on call requires you to think on your feet and jump into a new code base to fix things quickly. I’ve been part of the on-call rotation since my early days at Facebook, and I get to work on the full spectrum of tools as a result. There is no better way to learn and improve.

+ Passion = dream job

The chance to do the most meaningful work of my life and have a positive impact on the world on its own make Facebook D.C. an incredible place to work, but it’s so much more. Through a huge menu of events and groups, Facebook encourages and empowers employees to find their community and share their passion. For me, this translates to using my skills as an event planner to organize hackathons and team-building activities for my colleagues. The BFF Program, which is exclusive to Facebook D.C., encourages co-workers to find common interests, outside of work. No matter what you’re interested in, you can find a way to express it at Facebook.
My advice to any engineer dreaming of an exciting career at a startup where the possibilities are endless and the impact is global? Look no further than Facebook D.C.
